Clearwater Threshers News Release
DUNEDIN, Fl - Despite holding a 2-0 lead in the third, the Clearwater Threshers had their two-game winning streak snapped with a 6-3 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays on Saturday night at TD Ballpark.
Right-hander Jean Cabrera made his ninth start of the season on the mound for Clearwater, allowing two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out six in 3.1 innings of work.
The Threshers (4-10, 39-40) opened the scoring in the second inning, using an infield singe by Kendall Simmons and a two-run home run from Wilfredo Flores to grab an early 2-0 lead. It was Flores' second long ball of the season.
Tied 2-2 in the sixth, the Blue Jays (8-5, 36-43) pushed home four runs on five hits, including a three-run homer by Riley Tirotta off right-handed reliever Gunner Mayer to make it a 6-2 lead for the home team. It was Mayer's first appearance on the mound for the Threshers since May 3.
Trailing 6-2 in the eighth, the Threshers stringed together three hits, including a double by Erick Brito and scratched across one run on an RBI single by rehabber Nick Maton to trim the deficit to 6-3. Marcus Lee Sang grounded into a double play to end the threat, however.
Along with Mayer, the Threshers used a combination of three other relievers in Alex McKenney, rehabber Trevor Bettencourt and Tristan Garnett the rest of the way.
Clearwater will look to salvage a split of the six-game series on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Left-hander Jordan Fowler (1-0, 1.90 ERA) is scheduled to make his first start of the season for the Threshers, with coverage on the Threshers Broadcasting Network set to begin at 11:50 a.m.
