Three Stripers Pitchers Flirt with No-No vs. Norfolk

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Three Gwinnett Stripers pitchers carried a no-hitter through 7.1 innings Friday night in a 5-4 win against the Norfolk Tides in a three-game series opener at Coolray Field.

Kyle Wright, the Atlanta Braves' No. 2 prospect, made a strong impression in his first Triple-A start for Gwinnett. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed only one baserunner - a D.J. Stewart hit-by-pitch - over his first 5.0 innings.

But Wright unraveled in the sixth, walking the first three batters in the frame. Breyvic Valera hit a sacrifice fly to score Mike Yastrzemski, cutting Gwinnett's lead to 3-1. Cedric Mullins then stole second base, and catcher Alex Jackson made an errant throw into center field, allowing Ruben Tejada to score the second run of the inning. After Wright walked Pedro Alvarez, he struck out Chance Sisco and was pulled for left-hander Phil Pfeifer. Pfeifer (H, 2) got Luis Sardinas to fly out, halting further damage.

Gwinnett had built a 3-0 lead through five innings against left-hander Josh Rogers. Austin Riley drove in the first two runs with a pair of RBI doubles in the first and third innings, while Carlos Franco drilled a solo home run (15) in the second. Franco, who also went deep Monday vs. Durham, has homered in back-to-back games for the first time since May 16-17 at Columbus.

Leading 3-2 in the seventh, Phil Gosselin led off the inning with a single and Jackson followed with a walk. After a Jonathan Morales fielder's choice moved both runners into scoring position, Rogers walked Luis Marte to load the bases. Two batters later, reliever Luis Gonzalez walked Riley to bring Gosselin in. Sisco then allowed a passed ball and Jackson slid under the tag from Gonzalez to make it 5-2.

The Tides picked up their first hit in the eighth when Mullins hit a hard grounder to the right of Gosselin at second and reached on an infield single. Wes Parsons, who came on in the seventh, then gave up an RBI triple to Valera. Stewart then looped a single to right, scoring Valera to make it 5-4. But Parsons worked out of the inning with the lead intact.

Parsons struck out two batters in the ninth to secure a three-inning save and give the Stripers the win.

Wright (W, 1-0) worked a final line of 5.2 innings, no hits, two earned runs, four walks and five strikeouts. Parsons (S, 1) went 3.0 innings with four hits, two earned runs and a walk allowed with four strikeouts. He earned his first career Triple-A save in the process.

Riley led the Stripers offensively, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Jackson was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Rogers (L, 7-9) allowed seven hits, five runs (three earned) and a walk with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings in his second start in the Baltimore organization since his trade from the New York Yankees on July 24.

Valera was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Tides.

The Stripers (51-57) and Tides (58-51) meet again Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Right-hander Bryse Wilson, Atlanta's No. 13 prospect, is scheduled to make his Triple-A debut. Lefty John Means (5-2, 2.99 ERA) goes for Norfolk. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 5:35 p.m.
