Indians Collect 14 Hits to Ground Mud Hens, 12-7

TOLEDO, OHIO - Pablo Reyes and Ryan Lavarnway combined for seven hits as the Indianapolis Indians rolled to a 12-7 victory over the Toledo Mud Hens on Friday night. The Tribe offense had four different hitters record multi-hit games, including Reyes' four-hit effort. The triumph moved Indy back to 3.5 games in front of Toledo in the International League's West Division.

Friday marked the first time this season Reyes batted third for the Tribe, and he started his night off with a triple to center field in the top of the first inning. Lavarnway followed with a single to right field to account for the first of many runs for Indianapolis (61-50).

With the game tied, Reyes belted a home run to straightaway center field in the third inning to put the Indians ahead for good. It was Reyes' eighth home run of the season, six of which have been clubbed since July 12.

The middle part of the game proved very productive for the Indy offense, and five-hitter Wyatt Mathisen clubbed the Tribe's second grand slam of the season in the fifth inning. He drove home Jason Martin, Reyes, and Lavarnway with the slam. Mathisen joins Max Moroff as the only Indians batters to belt a grand slam this season.

Toledo (57-53) scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to trim the lead to one run, but Indy answered with four more runs in the sixth. With Jerrick Suiter and Alfredo Reyes aboard, Kevin Newman doubled into right-center field to plate both. Pablo Reyes and Lavarnway each knocked in runs after Newman's double.

Newman led off the eighth with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch. He finished Friday's game with three hits and fell a homer shy of the cycle, while Reyes was just a double short of the feat. Reyes and Lavarnway batted back-to-back in the lineup and they combined for seven hits, seven runs scored, and four runs knocked in.

Columbus lost on Friday night to the Louisville Bats, so the Tribe's lead over the third-place spot in the division is now 4.5 games. Second-place Toledo now sits 3.5 games off the pace set by Indy.
