Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (APRIL 26, 2011) - Winston-Salem fell behind early, but put up three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, and held on to win 3-2 over Frederick Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. After allowing two runs in the first three innings, the Dash pitching staff held the Keys scoreless for the remainder of the ballgame.
Frederick (7-10) reached the scoreboard in the first inning for the second time in the series. Trent Mummey singled, and then scored on Tyler Townsend's double to put the Keys up 1-0 against Dash starter Andre Rienzo.
In the third, the Keys doubled their lead. L.J. Hoes started the frame with a single, and Rienzo then retired the next two hitters. Buck Britton followed with a dribbler up the middle that evaded both middle infielders and escaped into centerfield for a base hit, scoring Hoes from second to put the Keys up by two.
After walking the next hitter, Rienzo set down eight straight Keys and held them off the scoreboard for the remainder of his outing.
Winston-Salem (8-10) broke through in the sixth inning. Daniel Wagner bunted his way aboard to start the frame. The single extended Wagner's hitting streak to 12 games. He advanced to third base after Jose Martinez hit a ground-rule double to right field. Jared Mitchell then singled, scoring Wagner and Martinez to tie the ballgame. After Mitchell was caught stealing, Ian Gac walked and Andy Wilkins doubled to put runners at second and third. Jason Bour then grounded out, scoring Gac and putting the Dash up 3-2.
The Keys put the tying run on base in the eighth and ninth innings, but relievers Addison Reed and Taylor Thompson shut down Frederick to end the game.
Rienzo threw 5.2 innings and gave up two runs, both earned. Reed (1-0) relieved Rienzo and picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings and Thompson earned his second save. Nathan Moreau (2-1) got the loss after allowing three runs in 5.1 innings. The win for the Dash was their second in the last nine games.
Winston-Salem and Frederick continue their series with a noon game on Wednesday. LHP Hector Santiago (0-1, 5.54 ERA) starts for the Dash against RHP Ryan O'Shea (1-1, 2.30 ERA). Fans can catch all the action beginning at 11:45 a.m. on www.wsdash.com.
