Chicago Stars FC News Release
CHICAGO (May 22, 2013) - Canada WNT has announced their 18-player roster for the Sunday, June 2nd Women's International Friendly against USA at BMO Field in Toronto that includes Red Stars goalkeeper Erin McLeod and defenders Carmelina Moscato and Rachel Quon. This is Quon's first call-up to a Canada camp.
Born in Lake Forest, Ill., and educated at Stanford where she was named an NSCAA all-American, Quon, 22, has played with the USWNT at virtually every junior level, including the U-17 and U-23 teams. On a roster that includes a mix of veterans and fresh faces, Quon will be the only player completely new to the Canadian WNT.
"She's doing well in the pro leagues, she's young, she fits the profile we're looking for in that position," said Canadian Head Coach Herdman in an interview with CBC News.
A family connection allows Quon to play for Canada, although her eligibility to play for Canada is an on-going process as it is still pending the approval of FIFA.
McLeod and Moscato, veterans of the Canadian team, will also be attending the training session that begins May 30th.
McLeod, 30, was the starting goalkeeper for the Canadians at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. She has over 80 caps for her country and has been part of three World Cups and two Olympic Games. She was 19 years old when she made her debut for Canada in 2002.
Moscato, 29, made her first appearance with the Canadian National Team in 2002 at age 17. The centerback helped her team earn a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics and has participated in two World Cups.
The match at BMO Field sold out on the first day of public on-sale and will be a rematch of a London 2012 Olympics semifinal match, as the two teams square off for the first international friendly to take place during the National Women's Soccer League season .
Of the 18 players named to the squad, 14 currently play with NWSL teams, including the Red Stars, FC Kansas City, Portland Thorns, Seattle Reign, Sky Blue FC, and Washington Spirit.
The match will be broadcast live on ESPNews at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
