WORCESTER, MA - Massachusetts Pirates defensive back Aarion Maxey-Penton, kicker Josh Gable and wide receiver Thomas Owens made their mark on the 2022 Indoor Football League season. Each finished the year leading their respective categories in interceptions, field goal percentage and receiving yards as the Pirates head into their first round playoff game Friday night on Phoenix Field at the DCU Center against the Quad City Steamwheelers. The Pirates are 11-5 and the second seed in the Eastern Conference while Quad City is 9-7 and is seeded third in the east. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 eastern time.
Owens leads the IFL with 899 receiving yards. He is second in touchdown receptions with 21 and ranks third with 63 receptions, 14.3 yards per catch and 59.9 receiving yards per game. He is also fifth with 4.2 receptions per game. Owens is seventh in the IFL in scoring, averaging 9.3 points per game. This season, the former Florida International University standout rewrote the Pirates' record book as he became the Massachusetts regular season all-time leader with 198 receptions, 2,387 receiving yards and 53 touchdown receptions. His signature game this season was on June 3, vs. the Bismarck Bucks when he had eight receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown. Owens pulled in three scores the following week vs. the Green Bay Blizzard when he had seven receptions for 83 yards.
In the Pirates championship season of 2021, Owens led the Indoor Football League in receptions with 77 and was the only IFL receiver to surpass 1,000 receiving yards as he amassed 1,014 in 17 games. A 6'1" 207 lb. product of Boynton Beach, FL, Owens was a unanimous selection to the All-IFL First Team Offense.
Massachusetts kicker Jose Gable leads the IFL in field goal percentage. With those attempting 15 or more three pointers this season, Gable has made nine out of 15. His nine made field goals are sixth most in the league and his 15 attempts are 12th most this season.
Gable earned the Indoor Football League's Special Teams Player of the Week honors in Week One when he made a game winning 33-yard field goal as time expired giving Massachusetts a 30-27 victory over the Frisco Fighters on Phoenix Field at the DCU Center. He also made attempts from 35 and 24 yards. The 5'10", 175 lb. kicker from Kearney, NE finished that game three of seven on field goal attempts and was a perfect three for three on extra points as he accounted for 12 of the Pirates 30 points.
Maxey-Penton leads the IFL with seven interceptions. The former First-Team All-SEC performer at the University of Missouri is also second in the IFL with 24 passes defended and 17 passes broken up.
The Indoor Football League named him the Defensive Player of the Week in Week 19 as he helped the reigning IFL champions to a 60-17 win over the San Diego Strike Force at Phoenix Field at the DCU Center.
In that gaem Maxey-Penton intercepted San Diego quarterback Jorge Reyna in the fourth quarter and returned the pick 52 yards for a touchdown for his second "pick-six" this year. He also made four tackles and broke up two passes in the victory.
For the 5'10", 190 lb. defensive back from St. Louis, MO, it was his 12th interception in regular season action with Massachusetts which ties the team all-time record.
