
Three Monarchs Strike Gold In Germany

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs, the AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, announced on Monday that right wing Sam Ftorek, defenseman Doug Nolan and Assistant Equipment Manager Dana Bryson won the gold medal for the United States in the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Inline World Championship on Saturday, July 17, in Bad Tolz, Germany. The United States defeated the defending champion, Finland, 9-5, for the gold medal. Ftorek collected two goals in the victory, his only two tallies of the tournament. The win was the United States' fourth gold and seventh medal in eight world championships. Worcester IceCats defenseman Ernie Hartlieb led the team with 19 points (7-12=19). IceCats forward Chris Corrinet and Portland Pirates forward Brad Parsons also participated in the tournament.
Slovakia was the first team to fall to the United States, 7-3, in the first of three preliminary games. The United States then defeated Slovenia, 6-3, and edged Sweden, 5-4, in a shootout to advance. Austria challenged the United States to a shootout in the quarterfinals, but the United States prevailed with a 6-5 win. USA defeated Germany, 5-2, in the semi-final game to earn a spot in the gold medal game.
Ftorek appeared in all six games, registering three points (2-1=3) and four and a half penalty minutes. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, appeared in 52 games with the Monarchs during the 2003-04 season, collecting 15 points (6-9=15) and 63 penalty minutes.
Nolan also played in all six games, collecting two points (0-2=2) and three penalty minutes for the United States. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound native of Quincy, Massachusetts, played in 49 games with the Monarchs and registered three points (0-3=3) and 30 penalty minutes during the 2003-04 season.
Bryson served as the Equipment Manager for the United States. The Medford, Massachusetts, native is entering his fourth season with the Monarchs.
