Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME â The Portland Pirates today opened their 2004 Portland Pirates Hockey Schools at the Portland Ice Arena in Portland. The Pirates and Portland Junior Pirates will run four, one week sessions of skill development for boys and girls ages 7 to 16 this summer.
The first Pirates Hockey School will take place from July 19 to July 23, 2004 and the second week will be August 2- August 6 at the Portland Ice Arena, the official practice and training facility of the Pirates. Pirates' Head Coach Tim Army will once again serve as the director. The third and fourth weeks of the Portland Pirates Hockey Schools will be at the Biddeford Ice Arena, home of the Portland Junior Pirates, from August 9-13 and again from August 16-20. The camps in Biddeford will be run by Sean O'Brien, President and Associate Head Coach of the Portland Junior Pirates and Jay Pecora, GM and Associate Head Coach of the Portland Junior Pirates.
"Tim and his staff have a great reputation of working with young players through his involvement with USA Hockey and we are pleased and excited about the growth of the camps. Now that we have two locations we feel our Portland Pirates Hockey Schools are becoming one of best hockey schools in the area," said Brian Petrovek, Pirates' Managing Owner/CEO.
The Portland Pirates Hockey Schools will consist of five-day sessions with two and a half hours of on-ice instruction each day. The focus of the instruction will be on skating, puck-handling, passing, shooting and goaltending. The Portland Pirates Hockey Schools will also include off-ice instruction covering dynamic stretching, conditioning and agility training with Dana White. White is entering his second season as the Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Pirates and this year will serve as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the parent Washington Capitals as well. Before coming to Portland, White also worked with Tim Army as the Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. All enrolled players will receive a great deal of individual attention with the 1:8 instructor/skating teacher ratio. In addition to the overall experience each participant will receive a personal written evaluation and a Portland Pirates Hockey School jersey.
This year the camp will feature, in addition to Tim Army, current Pirates Chris Hajt, Louis Robitaille, Max Ouellet and 2003-04 Pirates Captain Graham Mink.
Over 100 kids have signed up for the first two sessions, ranging from Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island and as far as Maryland and Texas.
The mission of the Portland Pirates Hockey School is to provide top quality instruction in a supportive learning environment to assist players at all levels to meet and exceed their ice hockey playing goals with an emphasis on individual skill development.
