Boston Lobsters News Release

NEW YORK CITY - September 1 - Boston Lobsters players again had a strong showing at the U.S. Open Wednesday, as Irina Falconi, John Isner and Eric Butorac all advanced with wins. CoCo Vandeweghe was eliminated with a second-round loss to ninth-seeded Samantha Stosur of Australia, 6-3 6-4.. Falconi advanced to the third round with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over 14-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in a match that was moved to Arthur Ashe Stadium. She now has two Grand Slam victories under her belt heading into a third-round match against Sabine Lisicki of Germany, the No. 22 seed.

The 21-year-old Falconi, ranked 79th, had never won a match in four Grand Slam appearances before her three-set win over 45th-ranked Klara Zakopalova on Monday. Falconi had been 0-3 against top-20 players.

Cibulkova was a semifinalist at the 2009 French Open.

Falconi helped the Lobsters surge into the World TeamTennis playoffs at the end of the regular season when Vandeweghe went back to the West Coast to train for the Bank of West Classic at Stanford. Falconi was able to rack up two women's singles wins over eventual WTT Finals MVP Arina Rodionova of the Washington Kastles along the way.

Falconi will next compete with doubles partner Edina Gallovitz-Hall on Thursday against Alona Bondarenko and Kateryna Bonderanko, scheduled for the second match of Court 8.

Isner also advanced to the second round with a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (11), 2-6, 6-4 victory over Marcos Baghdatis.

The match between two big servers featured 25 aces, 14 for Isner. The 28th-seeded Isner topped out at 141 mph and Baghdatis, the 2006 Australian Open runner-up, at 132 mph.

Isner's next match is against another American, Robby Ginepri, who also won Wednesday.

Eighth-seeded doubled team of Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer advanced to the second round with a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-0 win over Grigor Dmitrov and Dmitry Tursonov.
