Three Home Runs Lift Myrtle Beach to 10-5 Win over Augusta

With two slow offensive performances in the last two games, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans picked it back up with a 10-5 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Wednesday night. The win evened the series 1-1 and pushed the Pelicans to a 61-31 record and 14-12 in the second half. Augusta dropped to 45-45 with a 9-15 second-half record.

The Pelicans used three home runs to power the lineup in the victory. Kevin Alcantara (1-5, HR, 4 RBI) had the biggest one with a grand slam in the third inning, his second of the year. Jacob Wetzel (2-5, HR, 2 RBI) and Ethan Hearn (2-5, HR, 3 RBI) both belted home runs later in the game. Five of the 12 Myrtle Beach hits were extra.

The win went to the bullpen as Chase Watkins (2-1) got the credit with 3 1/3 innings of shutout baseball and just one hit allowed with three strikeouts and two walks. In his first start with the Pelicans, Koen Moreno lasted 2 2/3 innings with four earned runs off four hits and four walks while striking out four.

Augusta's Brandon Parker (3-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI) blasted two solo home runs to lead the GreenJacket lineup. Adam Zebrowski (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI) also brought in two runs on a double in the first inning. The GreenJackets stranded nine runners and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Starting pitcher Rainiery Rodriguez (1-2) took the loss with seven runs, five earned allowed across his 5 1/3 innings. Rodriguez allowed seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts on the night. Estarlin Rodriguez and Rolddy Munoz came out of the bullpen, with each of the three pitchers allowing a home run to the Pelicans.

Augusta came out of the gates swinging with a three-run bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, Moreno threw a wild pitch to score Francisco Floyd from third with both runners moving to second and third. Zebrowski hit both in with a double to right field to make it 3-0 GreenJackets.

Alcantara struck with his grand slam in the top of the third. Parker Chavers and Juan Mora each singled with one out, with Josue Huma drawing a walk to load the bases. After Matt Warkentin struck out, Alcantara crushed his 12th home run of the season to left-center field for a grand slam to give the Birds a 4-3 lead.

Parker responded with a solo home run off Moreno in the bottom half of the inning to left center. The score was tied 4-4 after three innings.

Myrtle Beach took the lead back in the top of the fifth. With Chavers on first base and two outs, Warkentin doubled to left field to plate Chavers and give the lead back to the Pelicans at 5-4.

The Pelicans added to their lead with a two-run top of the sixth. Hearn came up with one out and two runners on and grounded a single to right field as both runs came in to open things up at 7-4 Birds.

Wetzel broke the game open with a two-run home run to right-center field in the top of the seventh inning. His eighth home run of the season came with two outs and extended the Pelicans' lead to 9-4 at the stretch.

Parker lifted his second home run of the game in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to left to cut the Pelicans' lead to 9-5.

The finishing touch game in the top of the eighth as Hearn led off the inning by taking Munoz's second pitch over the wall in right-center field for a solo home run. It was his sixth of the year and pushed the lead to 10-5.

Myrtle Beach and Augusta will square off for the series' third game on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.
