
Offense from Columbia Proves to be Too Much for Kannapolis in 8-3 Loss Wednesday

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Wednesday afternoon brought the heat at Atrium Health Ballpark, also bringing a tough matchup for the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers and the Columbia Fireflies. The Ballers had chances but left seven runners on-base in an 8-3 loss to the visiting Fireflies.
RHP Kohl Simas got the start for Kannapolis Wednesday, tossing 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking none and striking out one. RHP Lane Ramsey (L, 0-1) made his second rehab appearance, allowing two hits, three runs, one walk, and one strikeout.
Columbia opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, getting a run on a River Town RBI triple, scoring Jean Ramirez. Later in the inning, Town crossed the plate on a Carter Jensen sacrifice fly, giving the Fireflies a 2-0 lead.
Wilfred Veras gave Kannapolis their first run of the game on a sacrifice fly into right field in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Brandon Bossard to cut into Columbia's lead at 2-1.
Kannapolis took the lead in the bottom of the second with a two-RBI double from Victor Torres, scoring Benyamin Bailey and Samil Polanco to push the Ballers ahead 3-2.
Erick Pena crushed his second home run in as many games in the top of the fourth inning, a three-run shot to hand the lead back to the Fireflies, 5-3.
Daniel Vazquez added all the insurance runs the Fireflies could need in the top of the seventh and the top of the ninth with a sacrifice fly and a two-RBI single. The Columbia shortstop extended the lead to a wide margin at 8-3, which Kannapolis could not climb back from.
The Ballers and Fireflies will do business again in the third of six matchups on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. RHP Noah Owen (5-7, 4.91 ERA) will start the day on the mound for Kannapolis, with RHP Luinder Avila (5-7, 4.56 ERA) beginning the night for Columbia.
