Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa- Three young hockey players acquired by the Waterloo Black Hawks earlier this year were named to USA Hockey's Under-17 Select Team on Monday in advance of the Five Nations Tournament scheduled for next month in Crimmitschau, Germany.
Defenseman Sam Rossini, forward Garrett Wait, and goaltender Dayton Rasmussen will be part of the 20-man Team USA roster. The United States is the defending Five Nations Tournament champion and seeks to repeat last summer's success against squads from Slovakia, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Germany. All of the players appearing at the event were born in 1998.
Rossini was signed to a pre-draft tender agreement which will bring him to Waterloo next season. The 16-year-old appeared in 27 varsity games last winter as a sophomore at Burnsville (Minnesota) High School. Rossini has already committed to the University of Minnesota.
The Black Hawks selected Wait during Phase I of the 2014 USHL Draft, using a third round choice to snag the 5-11, 165-pound skater. As a sophomore at Edina (Minnesota) High School, Wait recorded 13 goals and 14 assists in 32 games. His three-point performance during a 3-1 State Semifinal victory versus Eagan - including the game-winning goal - helped the Hornets to their eventual Class AA State Title.
With a second pick during the third round of the draft, the Hawks chose Rasmussen, a freshman who split varsity goaltending duties at Holy Family Catholic High School in Minnesota. He posted a 10-1-0 record, with a notable 1.41 goals-against average and 92.6% save percentage in his first year of varsity hockey. Although he is only 15, Rasmussen checks in at 6-2 and 200-pounds.
All 20 players chosen to play in the Five Nations Tournament participated at the Select 16 Player Development Camp, which took place last week in New York. The first game in Germany will be held on August 13th versus Slovakia. Sioux Falls Stampede Head Coach Cary Eades will lead the U-17 Select Team at the tournament.
Earlier this month, three other future Black Hawks - Nick Swaney, Brock Boeser, and Thomas Novak - were named to the U.S. Under-18 Select Team. That squad will compete in a separate event next month, the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Czech Republic.
