Southaven, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings (7-2-0) scored three third-period goals to erase a two-goal deficit and knock off the Knoxville Ice Bears (4-4-2) 4-3 on Friday night on Concorde Career College Ice at the Landers Center.
The Ice Bears got the scoring started early in the first period. Bret Peppler took an outlet pass behind the RiverKings defense and beat Peter Di Salvo on a breakaway to take a 1-0 lead 6:47 into the opening period. Knoxville added to their advantage late in the second period when Brad Pawlowski, on the power play, found the back of the net with under five minutes to go in the middle frame to give the Ice Bears a two-goal lead. The goal was the first the RiverKings penalty kill had allowed at home all season.
But the RiverKings cut their deficit to one with under a minute to play. Mike Grace brought the puck into the Ice Bears zone and threw it to the front of the net where it deflected off of Ryan Marcuz and past Braely Torris with 34 seconds left in the second.
That kicked off an offensive outburst by the RiverKings in the third period. Charlie Mosey buried a Sam Higgins pass past Torris to tie the game at two. Two minutes later, Devin Mantha rifled a shot from the top of the left circle over the Ice Bears netminder as the RiverKings took their first lead of the game. Ben Rubin added the insurance marker when Michael Beaudry found him in the slot and slipped it past Torris to give the RiverKings a 4-2 lead with under seven minutes left.
The Ice Bears battled back late. Trevor Hertz found a loose puck just outside of the crease and pushed it past Di Salvo to bring the game within one with under three minutes left. But the Ice Bears could not convert with the extra attacker and the RiverKings held on to win 4-3, their seventh win in eight nights.
Peter Di Salvo (4-2-0) took the win after stopping 33 of 36 shots against. Braely Torris (1-3-1) turned aside 17 of 21 shots against in the loss.
The RiverKings are back on Concorde Career College Ice on Tuesday, November 24 to face the Huntsville Havoc for Youth Sports Night. Fans wearing their team's jersey will receive half off tickets at the box office. For more information, visit RiverKings.com or call 662-342-1755.
