SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Pensacola Ice Flyers (10-2-2) scored three unanswered goals in the first period to beat the Mississippi RiverKings (4-8-2), 3-2, at the Pensacola Bay Center Saturday night. The two teams play again tomorrow afternoon.
Matt Whitehead gave the RiverKings a 1-0 lead early in the first period by converting on a rebound with a backhand shot 1:21 into the game. Matt Harrington had the only assist on the goal as the RiverKings scored 1:21 into a game for the second straight night. From there the Ice Flyers ripped off three straight goals, starting at the 5:36 mark. Michael Budd deflected a point shot by Drew Baker to beat Peter Di Salvo for a tie game.
Pensacola took advantage of two power plays in the first to jump up 3-1. Baker scored with a shot from the center point which beat Di Salvo at 10:38 and Mitchell Good finished off the second power play with a goal at 16:49. Budd was credited with the primary assist on both goals for a three point game.
The RiverKings started a comeback effort in the second period when Harrington scored his fifth goal of the season. He found a loose puck and threw it to the net, where several Ice Flyers players were sprawled. It found its way through Max Strang to pull the RiverKings within one at 3-2 with 6:30 left in the second. After that point the RiverKings couldn't beat Strang and lost their fourth straight game.
