Mississippi RiverKings News Release
LAFAYETTE, La. -- The Mississippi RiverKings (2-2-0) trailed by two heading into the first intermission and never regained momentum as they fell on the road to Louisiana (5-1-0) 5-2.
Chris Wilson started the scoring for Louisiana at the 6:34 mark of the first period after taking a pass out in front and beating Dan McWhinney top shelf to put Louisiana in front early. Forty seconds later, Jason Trask found the back of the net for the 'Gators to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
The RiverKings battled back with a goal of their own two minutes later. Down a man, Mike Grace found Matt Harrington streaking through the neutral zone, and Harrington slid the puck past a diving Matt Zenzola to cut the deficit to two at the 9:37 mark. But before the period ended, Wilson tallied his second goal of the period to send the 'Gators to the locker room ahead by two.
The teams traded goals late in the second period. With Louisiana on a five-on-three, Jason Cohen deposited a slap shot past McWhinney to extend the IceGators' lead to three. But with just 42 seconds remaining in the period, Todd Hosmer's shot beat Zenzola blocker side to send the RiverKings into the second intermission trailing by two.
In the third, the RiverKings outshot Louisiana 12-5, but it was the 'Gators that found the back of the net as Trask notched his second goal of the game to give Louisiana their third straight win, 5-2.
Dan McWhinney (1-2-0) took the loss after stopping 25 of 30 shots against. Matt Zenzola (4-0-0) stopped 28 of 30 shots against in the win.
