Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Arnprior, Ontario -- Brandon Wheat Kings prospects Jesse Hall and Mark Stone almost single-handedly lifted the Winnipeg Thrashers to victory in Day 3 of the TELUS Cup national midget championship Wednesday night.
The Thrashers improved to a perfect 3-0 thanks to four points each from Stone and Hall - the only players on the team to figure into the Winnipeg scoring - in a 4-3 Thrashers win over the Cole Harbour McCains.
Hall and Stone each finished with two goals and two assists. Both of Hall's goals came on the power play, while Stone tallied with the man advantage and shorthanded. The Thrashers held a 4-2 lead through 40 minutes and hung on to victory while outshooting Cole Harbour 32-20.
The Calgary Buffaloes are well on their way to their first victory at the event. The Buffaloes are up on Ottawa Valley 4-0 after one period. If the Buffs win, they will move to 1-1-1 for the tournament. Calgary takes on Séminaire St-François Blizzard from Quebec on Thursday and Cole Harbour on Friday.
Winnipeg takes on the host squad from Ottawa Valley on Thursday before wrapping up the round-robin against Sudbury on Friday. The top four squads advance to the semifinals on Saturday with the bronze and gold medal games slated for Sunday. The gold medal final will be televised on TSN. The West Region, which this year is the Thrashers, has won four straight national titles and five of the last six.
Stone, 15, was Brandon's 5th round selection (92nd overall) in the 2007 Western Hockey League Bantam draft while the 16-year old Hall was the Wheat Kings' 7th round pick (138th overall) in the 2006 draft - the same draft that saw Brandon choose such players as Brayden Schenn, Scott Glennie, Brodie Melnychuk, Brett Rock and Deven Dubyk.
The 2008 WHL Bantam Draft is scheduled for Thursday, May 1st in Calgary.
