
Thorns FC Re-Sign Forward Simone Charley

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Thorns FC today announced that the club has signed forward Simone Charley to a two-year contract.
"We are delighted to re-sign Simone. She is a player that has continued to develop during her time in Portland and has shown her value in this league," said Gavin Wilkinson, Thorns FC general manager and president of soccer. "Simone is a starting-caliber player, who provides us great options in numerous positions on the field."
The 2021 season will mark Charley's third season with Thorns FC. In her first two seasons with Portland, Charley made 21 appearances (13 starts) across all competitions, tallying two goals and three assists. In 2020, Charley featured in all 10 matches across the Challenge Cup and Fall Series, recording two goals and one assist. The Hoover, Ala., native, recorded the first goal of her Thorns FC career in the first match of the Challenge Cup against the North Carolina Courage.
"Simone gives us a unique dimension in the final third with attacking qualities that provide a constant threat to the opposition," said Thorns FC head coach Mark Parsons. "She has shown an incredible commitment to her own development and we are confident she can reach new heights in the coming years."
Charley played her first professional season with Portland in 2019. She made her professional debut and first career start for the club in a road match against Sky Blue FC on May 25. In her first season, Charley made 11 appearances (6 starts), logging 496 minutes and two assists. In addition, Charley played on loan with Canberra United for the 2019-20 W-League campaign. During her loan stint, Charley played and started in 11 matches, recording five goals and one assist.
