Thorns FC Notch 5-0 Shutout Win against Nj/Ny Gotham FC at Providence Park

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Thorns FC (5-1-6, 21 pts) notched a 5-0 shutout win against NJ/NY Gotham FC at Providence Park on Saturday night. The victory extended Portland's unbeaten streak to eight games (4-0-4), moving them into second place in NWSL standings. Taylor Porter, Olivia Moultrie, Marissa Everett, Hannah Betfort and Morgan Weaver all got on the scoresheet for tonight's result.

Defense + Offense

Portland recorded its sixth clean sheet of the season in the match, which is tied for the league lead with OL Reign. Notably, it was the team's fifth shutout win with three or more goals scored in 2022. According to Opta, Thorns FC set a new league record for fastest time from kickoff to record three goals (10:13). Portland held the previous league record (15:22) from its 5-0 win against Chicago in 2021. Thorns FC lead the league with 29 goals and a +19 goal differential. Additionally, Portland has scored multiple goals in seven of its last eight matches, and at least one goal in eight straight matches. At Providence Park, Thorns FC have outscored their opponents by a margin of 18-3 this season, while tallying 11 goals in their last two matches and conceding zero.

Dominant Depth

Seven different players contributed to Portland's five goals tonight, with Porter, Moultrie, Everett, Betfort and Weaver each scoring one and Yazmeen Ryan, Weaver and Madison Pogarch adding assists. Porter, Moultrie and Weaver each registered their second goals of the season. Portland has six players this campaign with two or more goals - the most of any team in the league. Everett and Betfort recorded their first goals of the 2022 campaign, becoming the 11th and 12th players to score for Portland this year. Betfort's goal was the first of her professional career. Weaver also became the 11th Portland player to tally an assist this season. No other team in the league has more goal scorers (12) or players with an assist (11) than Thorns FC in the 2022 campaign. Ryan registered her team-leading and league-leading fourth assist of the season. Notably, Ryan has tallied one goal and three assists in Portland's last four matches.

Goal-Scoring Plays

POR - Taylor Porter, 5th minute: Meghan Klingenberg served in a corner kick for Portland. Gotham FC attempted to clear it, but the ball fell to the feet of Taylor Porter inside the box, and she slotted it past NJNY goalkeeper Ashlynn Harris.

POR - Olivia Moultrie (Yazmeen Ryan), 7th minute: Yazmeen Ryan dribbled through traffic in the middle of the field and played it into Olivia Moultrie on top of the 18-yard box. Moultrie took a touch onto her left and curled a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the goal.

POR - Marissa Everett (Morgan Weaver), 11th minute: From the left width, Morgan Weaver drove with the ball toward the endline and cut a cross back to the top of the six-yard box. Marissa Everett jumped on the end of it, sending a one-time finish across the goal line.

POR - Hannah Betfort (Madison Pogarch), 65th minute: Madison Pogarch received the ball in the middle of the field, took a touch and lofted a ball in behind the Gotham back line and into the box. Betfort met the ball in the air and flicked it inside of the right post.

POR - Morgan Weaver, 80th minute: Harris attempted to play a pass out of the back, but Weaver intercepted it, hitting a one-time curling shot back into the goal.

Notes:

Portland is unbeaten in its last eight matches overall with a record of 4-0-4.

Tonight's win moved Thorns FC into second place in the league (5-1-6, 21 pts).

Thorns FC set a new league record for fastest time from kickoff to record three goals (10:13). Portland held the previous league record at 15:22 (vs. Chicago in 2021).

Portland has scored multiple goals in seven of its last eight matches, and at least one goal in eight straight matches.

Thorns FC have recorded 11 goals in their last two matches played at Providence Park without conceding any.

The result marked Portland's fifth shutout win this season with three or more goals scored, and sixth clean sheet overall.

Thorns FC have the most goals scored in the league with 29, which is nine more than the next closest teams.

Portland also has the best goal differential in the NWSL (+19). San Diego has the next highest (+8).

Thorns FC extended their unbeaten streak against Gotham to 11 straight matches (6-0-5), dating back to June 27, 2018.

Porter, Moultrie and Weaver each scored their second goals of the season.

Portland has six players with multiple goals this season, the most of any team in the league.

Everett and Betfort scored their first goals of the season, becoming the 11th and 12th players to score for Portland this season.

Betfort's goal was the first of her professional career.

Twelve goal scorers in one season is tied for the most in club history (2019).

Ryan tallied her team-leading and league-leading fourth assist of the season.

Weaver also registered her first assist of the 2022 campaign.

Weaver became the 11th player to tally an assist for Portland this season.

Thorns FC have the most goal scorers (12) and players with an assist (11) in the NWSL this year.

Seven players have registered both a goal and assist for Portland in the 2022 campaign.

Kelli Hubly is the only Portland player to start every match this season (12).

Hina Sugita appeared in her 12th match. She joins Hubly as the only players to appear in every match this season.

Michele Vasconcelos made her debut with Thorns FC.

Cheyenne Shorts made her NWSL debut.
