Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Barnstormers ended the regular season on some significant streaks. They won 11 straight at home and 12 consecutive series openers.
Those streaks ran into a brick wall named Daryl Thompson on Wednesday evening.
Thompson fired a two-hit shutout, fanning 11, pitching his hometown Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to a 2-0 series opening win over the Lancaster Barnstormers in the Freedom Division Series.
The one-time Cincinnati right-hander, who hails from LaPlata, MD, not far from Regency Furniture Stadium, limited the Barnstormers to just a pair of doubles. One was a ball creamed into the left field corner by Kent Matthes in the first inning. Zach Collier led off the fourth with the other, a blooper down the left field line.
From there, Thompson took care of business, retiring the final 18 Barnstormers he faced.
His left fielder Reggie Abercrombie spared Thompson some trouble in the fifth inning, racing back into deep left to haul in a drive off the bat of Brian Cavazos-Galvez. Abercrombie followed that with a sliding catch of a sinking liner off the bat of Luke Hughes in the fifth.
Southern Maryland's offense was sparse off a quintet of Lancaster pitchers. Jovan Rosa slapped a leadoff homer onto the right field picnic deck off Edwin Carl in the second.
Carl left after six innings, having yielded three hits and a run in six innings. He walked three and struck out five.
With one out in the seventh, Casey Frawley sliced a single into right off Pete Andrelczyk. Bryant Nelson, with Frawley in motion, hit a grounder to the left of second. Lance Zawadzki failed to make the pickup, putting runners at first and second with one out. Antone DeJesus then yanked a ground single into right, scoring Frawley. The other runners moved to second and third on Kent Matthes' throw home. Al Yevoli smothered the offense from there, keeping the deficit at two.
Altogether, the Blue Crabs managed only five hits on the night.
Lancaster will send Nate Reed (8-7) to the mound on Thursday against fellow left-hander Brian Burres (8-9). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Lancaster is now 18-9 all-time in the post-season...It is the first time that Lancaster has been shutout and only the second time that the Barnstormers have dropped the first game of a playoff series...Lancaster was shutout 14 times during the regular season, six on complete games...The two hits matched a season low.
