Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, Tenn. - In honor of Brad Thompson's attempt at a 97-year-old minor league record, the Tennessee Smokies are announcing a two-for-one ticket promotion for the Wednesday night game against West Tenn. Any ticket purchased for Wednesday's game will also be honored for any comparable seat for a home game during the 2101 Smokies season.
"A chance to witness an event like this apparently only comes around every 97 years," Smokies General Manager Brian Cox said. "I know I won't be around in 2101, but I'm confident the GM of the future will honor the ticket."
While the Smokies are hoping for a large crowd, the game is not sold out.
"It would be great for Brad to set the mark if front of a full house," Cox said.
The home crowd was an advantage for Thompson in his last start.
"I definitely felt the support behind me," Thompson said. "That really helped me out."
Tickets can be acquired by calling the Smokies at 865-286-2300 or online at www.smokiesbaseball.com.
With the first out of the game Thompson will set the Southern League mark for consecutive scoreless innings in a season. He's thrown 43 1/3 scoreless innings this season and has thrown 52 consecutive scoreless minor league innings since August of last year. The minor league record of 56 scoreless innings was set by Birmingham's Irvin Wilhelm in 1907. Also in sight is Orel Hershiser's professional baseball mark of 59 scoreless innings streak set in 1988.
First pitch Wednesday night is scheduled for 7:15.
