Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

High Point, NC - Daryl Thompson (W, 10-6) rolled past the Rockers to eight scoreless innings in a decisive Blue Crabs series opening victory over High Point in a 4-0 victory.

Daryl Thompson won his eighth straight start, and to make it even more impressive, three of his last four starts have been scoreless. In those three starts, he has allowed a combined six hits in 21.1 innings, while striking out 21 and walking just two batters. Tonight, Thompson allowed just two hits, while tossing eight scoreless innings, struck out nine batters and didn't issue a single walk.

The offense started in the second inning, and that is where three quarters of the combined offensive production came in the evening. Facing the Rockers' starter, Chris Pennell (0-1), Charlie Valerio blasted his second homer in his last three games, and his seventh of the year. After the two-run bomb, Rubi Silva reached on an error to score Jon Griffin, and the Blue Crabs were up 3-0.

Strikeout after strikeout, scoreless inning after scoreless inning Daryl Thompson continued to roll past the helpless Rockers bats.

The offensive stung once more in the top half of the fifth when Dean Green pulled a solo shot to right field to put Southern Maryland up 4-0. The only sour part of the evening was that Cory Vaughn's incredible streak of 45 straight games in which he either reached base or drove in a run came to an end.

Southern Maryland rode the dominant right arm of Daryl Thompson, and a perfect seven pitch ninth inning from Mat Latos, along with a pair of Blue Crabs homers to a 4-0 victory over the Rockers.

The Blue Crabs will return home on Friday August 2nd for the series opener of a three game set with the Somerset Patriots, and a 6:35 p.m first pitch.
