Cape Breton Eagles News Release

BAIE-COMEAU - The third period proved to be the difference as the Screaming Eagles fell 7-4 to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Friday night in Baie-Comeau.

The first period was a story of special teams, as both teams would earn two power plays, and only one of those power plays would not lead to a goal. Egor Sokolov would open the scoring for the Eagles with a power play marker at the 5:56 mark, but Jordan Martel would counter by putting home a rebound on frantic sequence just after the 8 minute mark. Mathias Laferrière would have the last word for the period as his goal on the man advantage gave the visitors the lead.

Period two would follow the same pattern of trading goals. The Drakkar evened the contest early in the middle stanza on a goal by Tyler Hylland. Yaroslav Alexeyev, came in on a one on one, identified Hylland trailing the play and after a pass Hylland would roof a backhand over Kevin Mandolese.

A nifty effort from Shaun Miller put the Eagles in front again. Miller twice circled around the net and the top of the faceoff circles before passing the puck off. Then WIlson Forest would make a pass to Miller at the side of the goal, and the Eagles forward spun around and backhanded it by former Eagle Kyle Jessiman to put Cape Breton in front.

Baie-Comeau would again tie the game, and lose that tie score, by period's end. The Drakkar's tying goal came from Samuel L'Italien after a bounce off the end boards. The Eagles regained the lead on a on timer by Laferrière, making the Eagles power play 3 for 3 to that point of the evening and making for a 4-3 lead heading to the final period.

But in the third frame Nathan Légaré would take over and play the hero on the night. The Drakkar forward put a high shot past Mandolese and the game was tied before the halfway mark of the period with a power play marker.

Légaré would give his team the go ahead goal at the 12:39 mark. He came in on a breakway past centre and managed to stay just ahead of Eagles defenseman Antoine Crête-Belzile to beat Mandolese and give his side the lead.

With just under three minutes to play Eagles coach Marc-André Dumont would elect to lift his netminder in favour of an extra attacker. While the Eagles outshot the Drakkar in the third period they were not able to find the tying goal, and both Gabriel Fortier and D'Artagnan Joly would hit the open net to make for a 7-4 final.

Ivan Chekhovich recorded three assists on the night, and in the process became the highest scoring import in the history of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, passing a mark set by Valentin Zykov.

Jessiman picked up the win, stopping 30 of 34 shots. Mandolese turned aside 24 of 29 shots in the loss in addition to the pair of empty net goals.

The Screaming Eagles will continue their road trip tomorrow evening in Chicoutimi when they take on Saguenéens at 5 PM Atlantic time. You can catch all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 8:00 on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com.
