Third Period Comeback Lifts P-Bruins over Sens in Shootout

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Belleville Senators Saturday night in a shootout 3-2 in their first meeting against the franchise. The P-Bruins got goals from Jordan Szwarz and Peter Cehlarik while Dan Vladar made his first start of the season in net.
Both sides started out slow with just a combined six shots through the opening ten minutes. Providence had some chances near the crease, but Andrew Hammond made some strong stops to keep the Bruins off the scoreboard. Eventually, a former P-Bruin gave the Senators the lead on the power play. Filip Chlapik sent a pass to the point for Thomas Chabot who blasted a slap shot towards Vladar. Ethan Werek tipped the shot that trickled in for his third goal of the season as Belleville took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Belleville wasted little time extending their lead to 2-0, scoring just 11 seconds into the second. Off a faceoff win from Nick Paul, Max McCormick fed Jack Rodewald in close. A wrist-shot beat Vladar high glove side for Rodewald's third goal of the season and the quickest goal the P-Bruins have allowed all season. Providence had a chance to cut their deficit with a 5-on-3 power play, but Belleville's defense held strong as they took a two-goal lead to the locker room.
Providence came storming back in the third, but it looked like their momentum would be for nothing after a Szwarz goal was waved off due to a high stick. Still, the P-Bruins attacked and finally got on the board at 13:45 thanks to a wrister from Szwarz at the point for his third goal in as many games. At 17:44, the Bruins stunned the Senators with the game tying goal from Cehlarik. Ryan Fitzgerald made a tremendous centering backhand feed through the crease to find Cehlarik, who went top left corner for his third goal of the season. Thanks to the ferocious comeback, Providence headed to overtime for the first time in 2017-18.
Each team had tremendous looks to end the game in the five minute overtime, but ultimately the game would be decided in the shootout. After the first five shooters came up empty, Szwarz ended it in the third round to send the Bruins home 3-2 winners.
Vladar stopped 25 of 27 shots while Hammond stopped 39 of 41. Providence was 0-4 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins conclude their weekend tomorrow afternoon at the Dunk when they welcome in the Laval Rocket for a 3:05pm faceoff.
