The Streak Is Over!! - Albany-Colonie shuts down Pioneers 2-0

The Elmira Pioneers 10-game winning streak came to a close Saturday night as Albany-Colonie spot starter Chris Begg fired over 7 brilliant innings in a 2-0 finThe Streak Ends at 10 - Albany-Colonie Defeats Pioneers 2-0 at Dunn Field.

Begg (3-2), making only his 4th start of the year, allowed just 2 hits through the first 7 frames but surrendered 3 singles in the 8th to get in a jam. Reliever Mike Cosgrove induced a soft line-out by Jeremy Brostrom followed by a strike-out of Brandon Pernell to keep the Pioneers off the board. The Pioneers had put together the threat with back-to-back lead-off singles off Begg by Brian Jones and Mike Terhune followed by a 1-out single to LF by Osmani Garcia that loaded the bases before Cosgrove to came on to stop the threat.

It was the first time in the last 12 games Elmira failed to collect at least 10 hits. Albany-Colonie is 4-7 this year against Elmira as they won the 2nd to last game of the regular season. The Diamond Dogs (46-42 / 25-18) were eliminated from post-season contention with a 6-1 loss at Elmira Friday night. Elmira (53-36 / 28-16) is playing out the regular season before commencing on the playoffs with Game 1 at New Jersey Wednesday night.

Albany struck in the 5th inning against Jeff Andra (10-7). Carlos Sepulveda hit a one-out single to LF and advanced on a groundout. He scored on Jason Startari's single to LF despite a terrific throw from Rafael Alvarez that beat the runner. Brian Jones failed to hang onto the ball as he applied the tag and the Diamond Dogs took a 1-0 lead.

Albany struck again in the 7th with Sepulveda getting hit by a pitch to start the inning. .Startari drew a 1-out walk and Eddie Scott singled up the middle to load the bases. Julio Zorrilla's Sac-fly to CF brought in Sepulveda to make it 2-0.

The Pioneers and Diamond-Dogs will meet in the regular season finale Sunday afternoon at 1:05 at Dunn Field. LH Sean Brummett (7-5, 3.07) starts for Elmira against RH Jason Von Haefen (7-6, 3.20) for Albany-Colonie.
