Elmira Pioneers News Release

Friday, August 30, 2002 - Dunn Field, Elmira, NY

The Elmira Pioneers extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 6-1 win over the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs to open the final homestand of the regular season. The Pioneers had already clinched a post-season spot the previous evening and tonight helped Adirondack clinch by eliminating the Diamond Dogs from post-season contention.

Shiegki Sano (3-3) lasted 8 strong innings allowing 5 hits and 1 run with 0 walks and 1 strike-out for the win. Sano retired 13 straight batters from the 2nd through the 6th innings. Albany's run in the 6th inning ended the Elmira pitchers' shutout streak at 24 frames. Pedro Quero went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's to raise his team-leading total to 64, 4 shy of Ashanti McDonald's Pioneer independent-ball record of 68.

Former Pioneer Eric Estes (8-6 / 5-3) took the loss for the Diamond Dogs after allowing Elmira to score 3 runs in the 5th. He was shortly thereafter ejected by home-plate umpire Josh Moose.

Elmira collected 10 hits on the night extending their streak of 10 or more hits to 11 games. The Pioneers are 7-3 vs. Albany-Colonie this season.

The Pioneers broke a score-less tie in the 5th inning against Estes. Rolando Bello belted a 1-out double to left-center. Brostrom was hit by a pitch and with 2 outs Mike Terhune drew a full-count walk on a pitch that Estes thought should have been strike 3 to end the inning. Rafael Alvarez took advantage by drilling a 2-run single to CF and Quero brought home Terhune with a single to LF through a drawn-in infield to make it 3-0 Pioneers.

Albany touched Sano in the 6th on a 2-out single by the league's top HR hitter Vic Davila followed by a double to LF by Melvin Matos and a wild-pitch by Sano to score Davila from 3rd.

Elmira closed the scoring with 3 runs in the 7th off reliever Derrick DePriest. Brostrom singled to LF and brandon Pernell walked. Both advanced on a wild-pitch. Mike Terhune single to RF scoring 2 runs and Quero drove in Terhune on a single to LF a couple batters later following a wild-pitch and a ground-out.

Jeff Andra (L)(10-6) starts the Saturday night game at 7:05 for the Pioneers and Sean Brummett (L)(7-5) will close out the regular season Sunday afternoon at 1:05.

Saturday the Pioneers will give away two great prizes from the Lawnmower Center in Elmnira including a gas-powered edge-trimmer and an electric leaf-blower. Sunday the Pioneers will give away the season's grand-prize courtesy of Larry's SportsCenter, the Fun Dealership. One lucky fan will win a Suzuki Ozark 250 Quad-Runner All-Terrain Vehicle.
