Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ- The Bridgeport Bluefish (20-17) defeated the Somerset Patriots (23-14) 4-3 at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Jerry Sands made it a ballgame with a three-run opposite field home run (9) to cut the lead to 4-3.
"I was looking for a curveball. I was sitting on one the whole at bat," said Sands. "He had beat me with heaters earlier in the game and once he threw the 0-1 for a ball I was looking curveball again. Luckily I got it up in the air and out of here."
Somerset threatened with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and had the tying run on third base again in the ninth, but failed to plate any more runs.
"I very much like the way we fought our way back into the game. You'd like to see us push a run or two across there in those situations," said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. "It didn't happen. They have some good arms out there. It didn't work out this time."
The Bluefish took an early lead in the top of the second inning with three runs. Jose Cuevas drove home two runs on a single and another run crossed home on an RBI groundout for Ozney Guillen.
Jose Gil padded Bridgeport's lead with an RBI double in the fifth inning to make the score 4-0.
Cory Riordan (2-2) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on six hits and five strikeouts in seven innings. David Kubiak (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in five innings pitched. David Carpenter earned his 13th save of the season.
The 2017 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Monday afternoon with a 1:05 pm game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. The game features a Memorial Day Celebration, an appearance by Beauty and the Beast, and $1.00 Hot Dogs. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
