Aside from Texas-Milwaukee, there was only one other game in the Western Conference on Thursday night, with the Oklahoma City Barons visiting the Hamilton Bulldogs for Game 1 of the North Division semifinal. The Bulldogs scored three times in the first period and coasted to a 5-2 win at Copps Coliseum to take a 1-0 series lead. Hamilton goaltender Drew MacIntyre earned the win with 24 saves in net.

There were three Game 1s in the Eastern Conference on Thursday, starting with Charlotte at Hershey. 2011 AHL All-Rookie forward Zac Dalpe scored a goal and assisted on two others, as the Checkers rallied for a 5-4 road win over the Bears in Game 1 of the East Division semifinal on Thursday at the Giant Center... Portland struck for three goals in less than three minutes during the first period and held on for a 3-2 win over visiting Connecticut on Thursday in the opener of the teams' Atlantic Division semifinal at the Cumberland County Civic Center... In the other Atlantic Division semifinal, Manchester scored in both the second and third periods, squeezing out a 2-1 win over visiting Binghamton in Game 1. Manchester goaltender Jeff Zatkoff saw his shutout bid go by the boards as a result of the late goal by Richard Potulny, but Zatkoff still preserved the victory with 34 saves on 35 shots between the pipes.

SERIES SUBPLOTS.......

* 12 Texas Stars made their AHL Calder Cup Playoffs debut on Thursday night in Milwaukee.

* Thursday night marked only the second time in team history that the Stars had lost the opening game of the series.

* Milwaukee rookie Gabriel Bourque scored 19 goals in 21 playoff games in his final year with Moncton of the QMJHL in 2009-10.

Playoff Format......

Four rounds, with each round slated as a best of seven series. The top four teams in each division qualify for playoffs. The teams play within their division for the first two rounds. The division winners will meet in the conference finals. The winner of the Western Conference will play the winner of the Eastern Conference for the Calder Cup. In order to take the Calder Cup, a team must win 16 games.

The Calder Cup.......

The coveted Calder Cup has been a motivational force for American Hockey League teams throughout the league's 74-year history. It is one of our sport's greatest challenges and ultimate honors to hoist the

Calder Cup in victory.

The trophy is named for Frank Calder, who served as the National Hockey League's first President from 1917 to 1943. During the 1920's, Mr. Calder was instrumental in guiding hockey into the mainstream of America's major cities including Boston, New York, Detroit and Chicago, while helping in the formation of the American League.

The Calder Cup trophy itself was actually first awarded in 1938 to the Providence Reds for winning the second International-American Hockey League championship. In 1996, George Parsons of the Syracuse Stars was presented the Calder Cup in a ceremony at the Onondaga County War Memorial, as it is believed the Stars never received a trophy for their 1937 championship.
