Texas Rangers Announce 2011 Round Rock Express Coaching Staff

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Round Rock Express Baseball, in conjunction with Texas Rangers Baseball, announced Thursday the 2011 Express coaching staff. Long-time Rangers' coach Bobby Jones returns for his 11th season as skipper for Texas' Triple-A affiliate. Terry Clark will serve as pitching coach, Scott Coolbaugh as hitting coach and Spike Owen as third-base coach, the teams jointly revealed. Jason Roberts returns for his third season as trainer, while Ric Mabie will serve as strength coach.
The 2011 season will be Jones' 40th in the Rangers organization. He began his managing career in 1988 with the Charlotte Rangers, leading the team to a Florida State League title the following season. Jones, the Rangers' all-time leader in minor league managerial victories - 1,427 through 2010, has managed at some level of the Rangers farm system every year since, save the 2001 and 2006 campaigns when he was a member of the Rangers coaching staff. Jones also led the Tulsa Drillers to a Texas League title in 1998.
Jones success with the Rangers Triple-A affiliate has been unprecedented. He posted 710 wins with Oklahoma City and is the franchise's all-time leader in managerial wins. Jones guided Oklahoma City to Pacific Coast League division titles in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010, and the PCL American Conference title in 2008. Drafted by the Washington Senators in 1967, Jones spent the next seasons with the organization, during with time the Senators moved to Arlington and became the Texas Rangers. Jones made his Major League debut as a player Oct. 1, 1974, and played all or parts of nine seasons in the majors over the next 13 years; he also played for Japan's Chunichi Dragons in 1979 and 1980.
Clark returns for his third season as pitching coach for the Rangers Triple-A affiliate. His Oklahoma City staff finished second in the PCL with a 4.03 ERA last season. Clark made his Major League debut July 7, 1988, with the Angels. He pitched in parts of six seasons for seven Major League teams - the Angels (1988, 1989), Astros (1990, 1996), Orioles (1995), Braves (1995), Royals (1996), Rangers (1997) and Indians (1997). Clark served as a pitching coach in the Indians farm system from 2000 to 2004, and was pitching coach for Double-A Frisco in the Rangers organization from 2006 to 2008.
Coolbaugh, a Rangers third-round draft pick out of the University of Texas in 1987, is in his third season as hitting coach for the Rangers Triple-A affiliate. He has previous managerial experience at High Desert (2000), Lancaster (2001) and El Paso (2003-2004), Coolbaugh served as hitting coach for Frisco in 2007 and 2008 before being promoted to the Triple-A level. Coolbaugh made his Major League debut as a player Sept. 2, 1989, with the Rangers; he played two seasons with the Rangers before moving to the Padres in 1991; he also played for the Cardinals in 1994. He is the brother of the late Mike Coolbaugh, a popular former Express player.
Owen also is no stranger to Central Texas, having starred at the University of Texas in the early 1980s and serving as a member of the Express coaching staff from 2002 to 2006. He most recently was the Rangers infield coordinator. Owen was the sixth overall selection in the 1982 draft by the Seattle Mariners and made his Major League debut June 25, 1983. Owen spent 13 seasons in the Majors with the Mariners, Red Sox, Expos, Yankees and Angels. He reached postseason play with the Red Sox twice, hitting .429 in Boston's ALCS victory over the California Angels. In 1990, Owen established a National League record with 63 consecutive errorless games at shortstop.
Round Rock hosts the Texas Rangers for an exhibition game March 30, 2011, at The Dell Diamond; first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CDT. The Express open their 12th season April 7, 2011, opening the season with four-game series at home against the Iowa Cubs and Omaha Storm Chasers.
