Texas Copperheads News Release
Each week txcopperheads.com talks with Head Coach Ollie Guidry about everything Copperheads. If you have a question for Coach Guidry, email it to cronquillo@texascopperheads.com. Next week, Coach Guidry might answer your question!
Here are quotes that Coach Guidry made on 6/3/08 as the Copperheads prepare for a week 11 visit to Rio Grande Valley.
On how the Copperheads handled the bye week: "The biggest thing we tried to do was heal up, so we wanted to give the guys as much time off as possible. We wanted guys to get away and get refocused."
On "must win" situations: "I'm such a competitor, every game is a âmust win'. With us being 1-8 and trying to get over that edge, go in the right direction and get some W's, I'm always trying to compete. I don't care who we play, where we play or when we play. We have to forget about everything else...we have to focus...we've got to get serious about this and go win the football game."
On the four upcoming scheduled games against division foes: "This (week 11 vs. Rio Grande Valley) is a winnable football game. Rio Grande is a good football team, every team for the next three weeks we play after that is a good football team. You talk about Corpus Christi, Bossier, Austin...all good football teams. We have to take it one game at a time. We have to stay focused. We have to come out there and make some plays, eliminate turnovers and have better production on both sides of the ball...and we will win."
On the team morale after a 1-8 start: "It's my job to make sure the team stays up. We are not a 1-8 football team. I don't expect these guys to accept being a 1-8 football team. We have to raise the expectations of this football team and turn this thing around. It's not easy being 1-8 but you have to stay positive, we have to always compete, and when something goes bad, you can not get your head in the tank. You have to stay positive and get out there and expect something good to happen to you."
On the play of new WR Gabriel Hatchett in week 9 against Lubbock: "It's about making plays. When the ball is up in the air, you go get the ball. When you have a chance to catch the football, go make something happen after the catch. Gabe did that. I was very pleased with his performance and now I'm going to work him even harder. I don't want you (Hatchett) to get relaxed. Now my expectations are higher, and his expectations need to go up as well. I feel very good about his direction."
On how to limit turnovers: "To me it's simple. You have to make good choices with the football. You have to protect the football. You need a good QB to center exchange, that's where it starts. Once the QB goes through his pre-snap reads and post-snap reads, he has to make good decisions. If it's not there, we have to throw the football away. That's the thing we have to do this week."
On the rematch versus Rio Grande Valley: "Both teams have had a chance to grow and develop over the last several weeks. There have been some changes to their personnel. The biggest thing is that we have to take care of our business. Regardless of what they are going to do for us, there is only so much you can do in this league defensively, we kind of know what to expect. We should know where to go with the football offensively. Defensively, we know what to expect. We have to make plays. It's my motto. I'll say it a million times. We have to protect the football and make plays. If we can do that, we should win."
