Jacksonville Sharks News Release

JACKSONVILLE - The 2013 South Division Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Monday that the team has activated defensive back Terrance Smith from inactive reserve.

The 26-year-old Smith (6'2", 198) appeared in each of the Sharks' first 16 games of the season, making 15 starts at defensive back. A dominating presence in the secondary from the start of the campaign, Smith led the team with 12 interceptions in 2013, breaking teammate Micheaux Robinson's franchise record. Smith also was the team's third leading tackler with a total of 74.5 stops (61 solo). He recorded 12 pass breakups, recovered four fumbles and notched 1.5 tackles for loss.

Smith's interceptions often came in bunches, as he led the Sharks with four two-interception games this season. Smith returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown in the Week 4 home opener against the New Orleans VooDoo, and also had two picks in Week 11, Week 13 and Week 16. The versatile Smith also caught two passes for 34 yards in spot duty at wide receiver.

Smith is in his third year with the Sharks. He spent most of 2012 as a receiver, catching 99 passes for 1,158 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also served as the Sharks' primary kick returner, setting new franchise records with 1,707 kick return yards and three kick return touchdowns. When Robinson went down with a late-season injury, Smith flipped over to defensive back and recorded an interception in four straight games, playoffs included. Overall, Smith set a new franchise record with 2,984 all-purpose yards, a performance that earned him a spot on the AFL's 2012 All-Ironman team.

Smith began his AFL career with Jacksonville in 2011, excelling on defense as a rookie. That year, Smith accounted for 65.5 total tackles (51 solo) and six interceptions. Smith showed his playmaking ability by returning three interceptions for touchdowns and also tied for the team lead with three fumble recoveries.

A native of Aiken, South Carolina, Smith was a four-year starter at South Carolina State University.

In other Monday transactions, the Sharks announced that wide receiver London Crawford has been placed on inactive reserve, and wide receiver Bobby Sewall has been placed on Other League Exempt (Tampa Bay Buccaneers). Sewall was placed on Refused to Report on March 2, and has not played for the Sharks this season. Following the transactions, the Jacksonville roster remains at the AFL maximum of 24 active players.
