Jacksonville Sharks News Release

JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks and the Arena Football League announced Tuesday that Jacksonville defensive back Terrance Smith has earned multiple League honors for his performance in the Sharks' 34-28 win over the Spokane Shock in Week 13. Smith has been named the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week, and his game-winning interception return touchdown has been selected as the AFL Highlight of the Week.

Smith was a major piece of the Sharks' overall excellent defensive effort, as Jacksonville kept Spokane off the scoreboard for the final 33:16 of Saturday's game. Smith himself directly factored in three defensive stops. In the second quarter, he knocked away consecutive passes on third and fourth down to keep the Shock out of the end zone in a goal-to-go situation.

In the third quarter, Smith grabbed the first of his two interceptions, racing under a pass that was tipped by Jack linebacker Charlie Hunt. While that interception allowed the Sharks to remain within one score, it was Smith's fourth-quarter pick-six that proved to be the biggest play of the game.

Jacksonville had just tied the score at 28 when Spokane began a drive at its own five-yard line with less than five minutes remaining in the game. As Shock quarterback Brian Zbydniewski dropped back and threw a quick pass to the right, Smith jumped the route, snared the interception and glided into the end zone to give the Sharks their first lead of the night. That touchdown proved to be the game's final score, as Jacksonville got a stop as time expired to seal the victory.

Overall, Smith finished Saturday's contest with a team-high total of 6.5 tackles to go along with his two pass breakups and two interceptions. It was Smith's third two-pick game of the season, and marked the second time in the last four games that he has returned an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. A 2013 All-Arena First Team selection at defensive back, Smith leads the Sharks with seven interceptions and ranks second on the team with 11 pass breakups this season.
