Tennessee wins over Carolina

ZEBULON, NC - The Tennessee Smokies scored three runs in the eighth inning to rally past the Carolina Mudcats 10-5 on Saturday night at Five County Stadium in front of 4, 989 fans.

After falling behind Tennessee 1-0 in the second, Carolina (29 -37) pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning as the Mudcats got a RBI singles from Shane Carlson and Felix Perez to take the lead.

Smokies spot starter Ryan Buchter gave up two more runs in the third inning as Kyle Day doubled home two runs for his first Double A RBI's and the Mudcats had four-run lead at 4-1. Carolina added their fifth run of the game on a Jake Kahaulelio home run to begin the fifth.

Tennessee (42 -26) then began on the comeback trail as they rallied to tie the game with a run in the sixth, seventh and then three of runs off Lee Tabor in the eighth inning as the Smokies loaded the bases with no outs. Tabor gave up a back to back singles to begin the inning and walked Matthew Spencer to load the bases ahead of Russ Canzler who delivered a two-run double which tied the game and Smokies pulled ahead on a double play ground out.

The Smokies added some big insurance runs in the top of the ninth as Brett Jackson beat out the rap on a double play ball allowing David Macias to score. Tennesse added another run when Spencer singled up the middle plating Jackson and a two-run double by Canzler ended the scoring for the Smokies as they took a 10-5 lead to the last of the ninth.

Carolina could not score against Blake Parker who pitched the eighth and ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.

The series continues tomorrow night at 6:15 when James Avery (2-3, 6.09) goes for Carolina and Chris Archer (8-2, 1.85) opposes for Tennessee.
