
Ten-Match Unbeaten Streak Comes to End for Timbers with 3-1 Road Loss to Toronto FC

TORONTO - The Portland Timbers' 10-match unbeaten streak came to an end with a 3-1 road loss against Toronto FC at BMO Field on Saturday evening. After going down 1-0 in the first half of the match, Josecarlos Van Rankin tallied Portland's lone goal to even the score in the 73rd minute before Toronto rallied back with two late goals to secure the win. The goal was Van Rankin's first for the Timbers.
Undefeated Run Snapped
Tonight's result snapped Portland's 10-match unbeaten streak, giving the Timbers their first loss since May 28 on the road against Inter Miami CF. Notably, it was the longest active unbeaten streak in MLS before coming to an end. The 10-match stretch is tied for the second-longest unbeaten streak in club history, and marked the fourth undefeated stretch of 10 or more games in the club's MLS history. During the streak, the Timbers scored 21 total goals. On the road, Portland posted a record of 1-0-3, tallying 11 goals.
Tonight's Milestones
Van Rankin scored his first career MLS goal in the match. The Mexican defender became the eleventh player to score a goal for the Timbers this season. Dairon Asprilla made his 150th MLS regular season appearance today for the Timbers. The Colombian striker became the sixth player in club history to reach this milestone with Portland (Asprilla, Sebastián Blanco, Diego Chara, Darlington Nagbe, Diego Valeri, Jack Jewsbury). Sebastián Blanco recorded his eighth assist of the season today. It marked his 50th regular season assist with the Timbers, helping him become the second player in club history to reach that milestone alongside Diego Valeri. Yimmi Chara also registered his team-leading ninth assist of the season. Goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic posted a career-best nine saves, surpassing his previous best of seven saves set during the 2021 season on Aug. 7 against Real Salt Lake.
Goal-Scoring Plays
TOR - Jonathan Osorio (Richie Laryea), 41st minute: Richie Layea dribbled down the right wing into the box, crossing the ball toward the six-yard box and picking out Jonathan Osorio, who slotted the ball into the lower-left corner of the goal with a one-touch shot.
POR - Josecarlos Van Rankin (Sebastián Blanco, Yimmi Chara), 73rd minute: From the left side of the field, Yimmi Chara cut the ball inside to Sebastián Blanco, who flicked the ball wide to Josecarlos Van Rankin on the right side of the box. Van Rankin settled the ball and delivered a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
TOR - Lorenzo Insigne, 79th minute: Michael Bradley chipped the ball into the six-yard box. The ball deflected off Timbers defender Bill Tuiloma's back before Lorenzo Insigne won the ball and fired a right-footed shot to the top right corner of the goal.
TOR - Federico Bernardeschi (Richie Laryea), 85th minute: Laryea dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box and played the ball to Federico Bernardeschi, who turned with the ball and struck a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Notes
Tonight's loss snapped Portland's 10-match unbeaten streak. It was the longest active unbeaten streak in MLS at the time and was tied for the second-longest unbeaten streak in club history.
The Timbers suffered their first loss since May 28 against Inter Miami CF.
Portland has scored in 22 of its 26 matches this season. Only Austin FC (23) has scored goals in more matches.
The Timbers have scored in their last 12 games, tallying 22 goals in that stretch.
Portland has scored 42 goals this season, which ranks as the third-most in the Western Conference.
Today's match was the 11th all-time meeting between Portland and Toronto, with Portland posting a 4-5-2 record against the Eastern opponent.
Josecarlos Van Rankin scored his first career MLS goal in today's match.
Van Rankin became the eleventh player to score a goal for the Timbers this season.
Sebastián Blanco recorded his eighth assist of the season today.
The assist was the 50th of Blanco's career with Portland. Blanco is the second player to register 50 career assists with the club in the MLS era along with Diego Valeri.
Yimmi Chara recorded his team-leading ninth assist.
Y. Chara and Santiago Moreno are the only players that have appeared in every match for Portland this season (26).
Additionally, Y. Chara is the only player that's started every match for the Timbers in 2022.
Aljaz Ivacic recorded a career-high nine saves in tonight's match.
Next Game
The Timbers will be back on the road next week to take on Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, Aug. 21 at Children's Mercy Park. The match is set for 4:30 p.m. (Pacific) with a national broadcast on FS1 and FOX Deportes as well as local radio broadcasts on 750 The Game (English) and La GranD 1150AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
