Daytona Tortugas News Release
BRADENTON, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (14-11, 50-44) combined timely hitting and strong pitching to beat the Bradenton Marauders (13-15, 51-45), 5-3, at McKechnie Field Thursday night. Antone earned his third win in four starts, as Angelo Gumbs hit his ninth home run.
The Tortugas scored first when Bradenton kicked the ball around in the third inning. With two outs and a runner at first, left fielder Erik Lunde dropped a Brian O'Grady pop up to put runners at second and third. Gavin LaValley followed with a groundball to shortstop Pablo Reyes, who airmailed the throw to allowed two runs to score.
Bradenton got on the board in the fifth inning, courtesy of a Tito Polo RBI single, to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
The Tortugas added a pair of runs in the next inning, as Daytona strung together four consecutive hits. With one out, Aristides Aquino doubled and Gumbs singled to put runners at the corners. The newest Tortugas, Juan Duran, then notched his first hit and RBI with a single to left field for the 3-1 lead. Tromp quickly added another run on a rocket past the third baseman Connor Joe to extend the lead, 4-1.
The Marauders crept back in the game thanks to Polo's two run homer to left field to get within a run in the seventh, 4-3. However, Gumbs launched his ninth long ball of the season a half inning later to give Daytona an insurance run and the 5-3 final.
LHP Juan Martinez, RHP Ariel Hernandez, and RHP Jimmy Herget combined to throw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, as Herget left the tying runs on base while striking out the side in the ninth. Antone (9-6) earned the victory, working 6 2/3 innings while allowing three runs, two earned, and seven hits. RHP Yuedy Garcia (4-7) suffered the loss, as he allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits in six innings.
