St. Lucie Mets News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. - Kevin Taylor delivered a key hit and three St. Lucie pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts in the Mets 3-1 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Thursday at Henley Field.
The Mets loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning and got a run-scoring ground out from Kevin Kaczmarski. After Tyler Alexander recorded two outs, Taylor lined a two-run double down the third base line to put the Mets up 3-0.
That was enough run support for Andrew Barbosa, Ben Griset and Paul Paez, who combined to limit the Flying Tigers to six hits and a solo home run.
Barbosa, who was activated from Double-A Binghamton's DL, was electric. He struck out eight batters in 4.1 innings. He scattered three hits and did not walk a batter is a quasi-rehab start.
Ben Griset followed and cruised for 2.2 innings, giving up one hit and striking out two to earn the win.
Paez surrendered a leadoff home run to Drew Longley in the eighth but retired the next six batters without giving up a run to secure his third save.
Taylor ended up 2 for 3 with a walk.
Alexander was charged with three runs in six innings. He took the loss.
The Mets snapped a two-game losing streak and stayed in first place in the FSL South Division.
Next Up: The Mets (51-43, 16-11) and Flying Tigers (42-51, 8-17) play the second game of their series at Henley Field on Friday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
