The first on-ice action of Training Camp 2023 kicked off on Sunday afternoon at the Pownal Sportsplex with Game 1 of the Cusson Memorial Cup.

20-year-old forward Giovanni Morneau opened the games scoring for Team Black and was a standout for the entire sixty minutes. Moncton native Will Allen ripped a shot from the slot past goaltender Niko Boudreau to give Team Black a 2-1 lead after the opening period.

Latvian import pick Aksels Ozols looked solid in his first action of Training Camp. The 18-year-old netminder showed poise in his puck-playing ability and earned an ovation from the crowd in attendance with a highlight reel cross-crease save. After 40 minutes Team White housed a 4-3 lead with goals from Simon Duguay, Lane Hinkley, and Alexis Michaud.

The play was back and forth in the third with goals from Marcus Kearsey and Kiefer Lyons. Goaltender Jack Carter from St. Phillips, Newfoundland was rock solid for Team White but wasn't able to close the door as Carl-Etienne Michel tied it up with 30 seconds remaining.

Brett Arsenault was the lone scorer in the shootout and earned Team White the Game 1 victory.

On Monday, Game 2 will start at 10 am followed by Game 3 at 5 pm both from the Pownal Sportsplex. All intrasquad action is free of charge to attend.
