Tarantulas sign player

June 30, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Topeka Tarantulas News Release

Topeka, KS: June 29, 2004 – The Topeka Tarantulas of the Central Hockey League have signed center Kelly Miller, head coach Joe Coombs announced today.

In 217 professional games the five-year pro has accumulated 97 points (43 goals, 54 assists) and has 321 penalty minutes. Miller, a 5’11”, 170 lbs center from Toledo, OH, had his best professional season in 2003-04 when he scored 18 goals and added 26 assists in 67 games for Rockford of the United Hockey League.

Miller, 25, has played for Toledo and Cincinnati in the East Coast Hockey League, Fort Wayne of the United Hockey League and San Angelo in the CHL. While in San Angelo Miller was a teammate of Tarantulas player/assistant coach Troy Mann.

Miller feels his strengths are, as a power forward, being able to play on any line, and his penalty killing ability. When asked about playing in shorthanded situations he said “I like to get the puck out of our defensive zone and be like a third defenseman. I try to position myself between the puck and the net. I also want to play for a top notch organization.”

Coombs met Miller at a hockey camp coached by Miller’s brother, Kenny, in his hometown of Toledo, OH.

Miller’s mother, Michelle, played a big part in her son’s hockey career when he was in pee wees at age 13. While picking up a pizza for Kelly’s pre-game meal her car was stolen, with all of Kelly’s hockey equipment in it. That evening Michelle purchased all new equipment so Kelly could compete in that evening’s game and continue his hockey career.

Tarantula season tickets are on sale now. To purchase tickets, or for inquiries, call the Tarantula office, 785-235-9466, in Landon Arena.
