Chicago Bandits News Release
Rosemont, IL - The Chicago Bandits have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with RHP Taran Alvelo for the 2020 NPF season.
Alvelo was drafted 8th overall by the Aussie Peppers in the 2019 NPF Draft before getting traded to the USSSA Pride during spring training. In her first season in the NPF, the Carroll, OH native pitched 44.1 innings over 31 regular season games, good for a record of 7-1 and an ERA of 1.38.
"Taran is an exciting addition to our club for this upcoming summer," General Manager Toni Calmeyn. "She was dangerous as a competitor and we know she'll be just as dangerous when she's suiting up for the Bandits. We are eager to see what she can do in the circle."
Alvelo was considered one of the most dominant pitchers in college softball during her tenure at University of Washington, and with good reason. In her four years as a Husky, she pitched 798 innings, earning a record of 102-27, including 28 shutouts and 85 complete games. She ended her career in Washington with an ERA of 1.98.
Her time on the West Coast brought an impressive list of broken records. Alvelo holds the second spot in career strikeouts at Washington with 895, and joins an elite list of UW pitchers Danielle Lawrie and Jennifer Spediacci as both the third Husky with 100 wins in their career, and the only Huskies with 300 strikeouts in a single season.
Now, Alvelo is ready to break some records a little closer to home.
"Growing up I watched the Bandits and always said I'd be on that field one day, and now I actually get to," Alvelo said. "Getting the chance to become a Chicago Bandit is a dream come true. This midwest girl gets to come home!"
