Bend Elks News Release
Bend, OR - Tanner Ring went 4-5 on Tuesday night, a double short of the cycle, including a 3 run home run that proved to be the difference, as the Bend Elks defeated the Kitsap Blue Jackets 8-6 Tuesday.
After stranding the bases loaded in the top of the 1st, the Elks scored the first run of the game in the second on a pair of Kitsap (4-9) errors, as Cullen O'Dwyer reached on an error and came around to score on a ground ball by Chase Fields that was misplayed by Blue Jackets 1st basemen Daniel Orr, making it 1-0.
The Elks added two in the second as Curtis Wildung tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by O'Dwyer, and Landon Cray scored on an RBI double by Fields to make it 3-0 in the early stages of the game.
Bend then made it 4-0 when Tanner Ring doubled to kick off the 4th, his 2nd hit of the game, and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Derek Dixon.
Kitsap got 2 back in the bottom of the 4th inning as Daniel Jewett drove in Orr and Andrew Lack to cut the lead in half. In the top of the 5th, Bend opened it up with a pair of home runs, a solo home run from Cullen O'Dwyer and a 3 run home run from Ring, his 1st, giving the Elks the 8-2 lead.
Daniel Jewett hit a 2 run home run in the 6th to chase Elks starter Taylor Elman from the game in the 6th with two outs. Kitsap would score 2 in the 6th, 1 in the 7th, and 1 in the 8th to make it a 2 run game heading to the 9th. The Elks had further chances to add runs through the course of the game, but left the bases loaded 3 times, stranding a total of 11 men on base.
Taylor Elman improved to 2-0 for the Elks (9-4) in his start on Tuesday, pitching 5 and 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on 7 hits, walking five while striking out four. Elman worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning and limited damage during his outing to give the Elks a chance to earn the victory. Nick Highberger came on in the 9th, following David Murrillo and Michael Jordan in the game, to close the door and secure the victory for the Elks.
Ring finished 4-5 with 3 RBI and scored twice, Curtis Wildung had a triple and scored, and Cullen O'Dwyer went 1-4 with his home run and scored twice to secure the first game of the series for the Elks, who also secured at worst a season-split with the Blue Jackets.
Game 2 will take place Wednesday against the Blue Jackets, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
