Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Atlantic League announced two members of the Sugar Land Skeeters were selected to the 2015 Red, White & Blue All-Defense Team on Wednesday. Third baseman Patrick Palmeiro and pitcher Roy Merritt earned the honors. Additionally, the Skeeters grounds crew earned the Grounds Crew of the Year award from the league.

"We had a lot on our plate this year in terms of extra activities at the ballpark and the record amount of rainfall received this year," Head Groundskeeper Brad Detmore said on receiving the honor. "The entire grounds crew deserves credit for all the hard work they put in and with their tremendous work ethic. We certainly couldn't do it without them. They are dedicated to their work."

Palmeiro led the Atlantic League with a .957 fielding percentage at third base. While manning the hot corner, Palmeiro committed just 15 errors in 350 chances this year. Additionally, he hit .256 at the plate and was second on the team in games played (128), doubles (28), home runs (13) and RBI (68).

Merritt started 17 games on the mound for the Skeeters before being traded to Somerset. His 2.53 ERA was tops among all Sugar Land starting pitchers and he tied for the team-lead in wins with seven before helping the Patriots to the 2015 ALPB championship. He committed only two errors on the year with the Skeeters and tossed 10-straight quality starts from June 18 to August 10.

Dan Lyons of Long Island was named the Rawlings Gold Glove Defensive Player of the Year. The full list of the Red, White & Blue All-Defense Team can be found at AtlanticLeague.com. The remaining end of season awards, including Executive of the Year will be announced tomorrow morning.
