YESTERDAY'S NEWS: The Tarpons and Hammerheads tallied just four hits apiece, but Jupiter prevailed with a 2-1 on Wednesday night...The game took 1:54, resutling in the quickest nine-inning game of the season for Tampa...RHP Garrett Whitlock settled for a no-decision despite a quality start (7.0IP, 2H, 1ER, 2BB, 8K, 91P/66S)...Isiah Gilliam (3-for-4, 3B, RBI) collected three of the four Tarpon hits, including a go-ahead RBI triple in the 4th...RHP Matt Wivinis (L, 1-2) surrendered a run in the 8th (1.0IP, 2H, 1ER, 0BB, 2K).
WAGS IS REACHING: Brandon Wagner (0-for-2, 2BB, R) walked in the 4th-inning on Wednesday, extending his on-base streak to 23-straight games. During that stretch, Wagner is batting .333 (25-for-75) with 18R, 2 doubles, 6HR, 20RBI, 18BB and 5HBP and has an OBP of .485. The 22-year-old owns the longest active on-base streak in the Florida State League.
STRIKEOUT KINGS: Garrett Whitlock (8K) and Matt Wivinis (2K) combined for 10 strikeouts on Wednesday. Tampa pitchers have tallied double-digit strikeouts in 42 games this season, with the Tarpons going 25-17 in such games. Tampa, by far, leads the Florida State League in strikeouts, totaling 865K entering today. That is 91K more than the team ranked second (Clearwater - 774K). Tampa is averaging 9.72 K-per-game and is on pace for 1,360K, which would crush its own FSL single-season strikeout record set last season with 1,215K.
VS. JUPITER: Today will be the eighth and final game scheduled between the Tampa Tarpons and Jupiter Hammerheads. Tampa currently leads the season-series, 5-2. The Tarpons took 3-of-4 in the first meeting at George M. Steinbrenner Field on 6/21-24. Brandon Wagner has played in all seven games and is batting .389 (7-for-18) with 7R, 1HR, 6RBI, 9BB and 3HBP. Donny Sands is batting .476 (10-for-21) with 4R and one double in five games against Jupiter.
DAY GAME GLORY: Today, the Tarpons will play their 18th day game. Tampa is 13-4 (.765) in games that start before 5:00 p.m.
REAL DIEHL: LHP Phillip Diehl turned in another dominant performance on Tuesday, striking out five the six batters he faced in a pair of perfect innings. Diehl is tied for third among all pitchers in the Florida State League with 79 strikeouts. Among FSL relievers, the 23-year-old ranks 1st in K/9.0IP (14.61), 1st in fewest baserunners/9.0IP (9.25) and tied for 2nd in holds (6).
ROAD TO RECOVERY: Both Estevan Florial and Keith Skinner began rehab assignments in the Gulf Coast League on Thursday. So far, Florial is batting .400 (4-for-10) with 5R, 1HR, 4BB, 2RBI and 4SB in four games, playing two games in centerfield (five-innings each). Skinner has played catcher in three of four games (five-innings each), batting .222 (2-for-9) with 2RBI, 2BB and a Sac-F.
BABY BOMBERS: The Tarpons currently leads the league with 76 home runs, which is 10 more than second on the list (Bradenton- 66HR).
SENSLEY'S SOLOS: On Friday, Steven Sensley clubbed his 13th home run (third with Tampa). All 13 have been solo home runs.
FOR STARTERS: RHP Nick Nelson (4-2, 3.12) will make his 11th start (12th appearance) with Tampa. Last time out, threw six shutout innings and earned the win at Lakeland on 7/7 (6.0IP, 3H,0R, 3BB, 5K, 81P/47S)...Began the season with Single-A Charleston, going 1-1 with a 3.65 ERA (24.2IP, 18H, 10ER, 1HR, 2HB, 7BB, 35K) in five starts with the RiverDogs...did not allow a run in his final 13.0IP with Charleston.
VS. JUPITER: Nelson stymied the Hammerheads on 6/24 in Tampa, earning the win with a scoreless 6.0IP (3H, 0BB, 8K, 80P/55S).
DAYLIGHT SUCCESS: In three day game starts, Nelson is 2-0 with a 1.10 ERA (16.1IP, 11H, 2ER, 2BB, 23K).
2017: Spent the season in the Single-A Charleston rotation, making 22 starts and registering a 3-12 record and 4.56 ERA (100.2IP, 103H, 54R/51ER, 50BB, 110K, 5HR)...tied for the SAL lead in losses...after going 0-6 with a 6.34 ERA (38.1IP, 27ER) in his first nine outings, was 3-6 with a 3.47 ERA (62.1IP, 24ER) in his final 13 starts.
Personal: 22-years-old, 6-1, 195 - Panama City, Florida...Selected by the Yankees in the fourth round in 2016 out of Gulf Coast State College...Played two seasons (2015-16) at Gulf Coast State College (Fla.), where he went 13-5 with a 4.16 ERA (114.2IP, 108H, 64R/53ER, 49BB, 121K) in 22 games (21 starts)...had committed to play at the University of Florida before signing with the Yankees...graduated from Rutherford H.S.
