Taking a Look Back at Friday Night's Action in the USHL

Youngstown 6, Cedar Rapids 1

Ryan Botterill's two goals helped lift Youngstown to a 6-1 home win over Cedar Rapids Friday.

Botterill, a Wisconsin commit, got the ball rolling with a pair of first-period goals.

Kuzma Voronin and Adam Pietila scored in the second period and after 40 minutes, it was Youngstown 4, Cedar Rapids 0.

Ryan O'Connell's eighth goal of the year, which came right after the third-period faceoff, cut the lead to three, but the Phantoms put the game away with goals from Pietila and Sascha Boumedienne.

Aiden Wright stopped 24 of 25 shots to pick up the win for Youngstown. The Phantoms have won four of their last five games.

Des Moines 5, Tri-City 2

Five different players contributed goals as Des Moines picked up a 5-2 road win at Tri-City.

Braden Rourke's second goal of the season, which came at the 11:51 mark, put the Bucs on the board first, but after Luke Posthumus replied for the Storm shortly thereafter, it was 1-1 at the end of one.

Ashton Dahms and Brady Smith put Des Moines up 3-1 in the second, while Dallas Vieau's goal pulled Tri-City within one before the end of the second.

Braedon Ford's power play marker and an empty netter from Garrett Drotts closed out the scoring in the game.

Jonathan Reinholdt had 28 saves to get the decision in net for the Bucs.

Waterloo 4, Madison 3

In a game that featured three ties, it took a late goal from Myles Hilman to give Waterloo a 4-3 victory over Madison.

Madson struck first on a goal from Andrew Kuzma at 17:23 of the opening frame.

Waterloo's Gavyn Thoreson evened it at 8:13 of the second, but the Capitols took the lead at 10:56 on Kuzma's second of the game. Reid Morich tied it 30 seconds later and when Hilman scored at 13:58, the Black Hawks had their first lead. Brendan Lamb knotted things up at 16:38 and after 40 minutes of play, the score stood 3-3.

Hilman, Waterloo's captain, scored the final goal of the game after Fin Williams offensive zone faceoff win at 18:48 of the third. The win gives the Black Hawks a 7-2-0-1 mark in their last 10 outings.

Dubuque 6, Chicago 5 ot

Including the game-winner in overtime, Noah Powell scored three times in pacing Dubuque to a 6-5 home win over Chicago.

Powell, an Ohio State commit, got the game's first goal to get things going at 1:47 of the opening period. Jake Sondreal, who leads the USHL in scoring, tallied a power-play marker at 14:46. Michael Hage's 17th of the season two minutes later cut the lead to one, but Jaden Jubenvill and Powell, with his second, scored goals before the end of the period at the end of 20 minutes, the Fighting Saints held a 4-1 lead.

Reid Conn scored a shorthanded marker in the second as the visiting Steel cut the lead to two and when Hage scored his second of the game at 1:02 of the third, it became a one-goal game. Juraj Pekarcik made it 5-3 in favor of Dubuque, but Charlie Major and Hudson Gorski scored before the end of regulation as the game went to overtime.

Powell completed the hat trick with the game-winning goal coming off a snap shot from the top of the slot at 1:36 of overtime. Since the beginning of December, Powell has tallied 16 goals and 12 assists for 28 points in 18 games.

Sioux City 5, Omaha 2

Sioux City scored three times in the third period in downing Omaha 5-2 Friday.

Omaha held a 1-0 first-period lead on a goal from Justin Stupka.

Brian Nicholas scored on the power play shortly after the start of the second period and when Alexi Van Houtee-Cachero found the back of the net at 12:46, Sioux City held the lead for the first time. Trey Scott's second goal of the season made it 2-2 right before the end of the second.

Colin Kessler, Tate Pritchard and Kaden Shahan scored third period markers as the Musketeers claimed their 23rd win of the season. Shahan's goal is his league-leading 26th of the year.

Dylan Silverstein stopped 26 shots to pick up his fifth victory in 2023-24.

Fargo 7, Sioux Falls 2

Fargo scored the first three goals of the game and never trailed in skating to a 7-2 road win at Sioux Falls Friday.

Iiro Hakkarainen and Jake Fisher staked the Force to a 2-0 first-period lead.

Fisher's second goal of the game, which came at 5:26 of the second made it 3-0. Tyler Borgula tallied at 10:32 to cut the lead to two, but Leo Gruba and Michael La Starza scored goals before the end of the period and after 40 minutes it was a 5-1 Fargo lead.

The Force, who own a league-best 32-5-2-0 record, got third-period goals from Zam Plante and Tom Leppa, while Micah Berger responded for Sioux Falls.

Hampton Slukynsky turned aside 20 shots in upping his record to 17-1-0-0 for the year.
