T-Bones Late-Inning Rally Falls Short in 11-9 Loss

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Kansas City took an early 3-1 lead against Joliet before the JackHammers scored 10 unanswered runs to send the 5,539 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark home with an 11-9 loss. The T-Bones, in their first home game since the All-Star Break, allowed four-run innings in both the fifth and the eighth that proved to be the difference in the game.
Kansas City made a valiant late-game rally with a five-run ninth inning, pulling within two on a three-run home run by Neb Brown, but that was as close as the T-Bones would get in falling to 2-3 in the second half of the season.
After Joliet outfielder Kevin Sullivan misplayed a ball off the left-field wall, allowing Rob Watson to reach third, Kansas City tied the game on Mario Delgado's RBI single that made the score 1-1 after three innings.
The T-Bones took their only lead of the game 2-1 when Brown scored from third on a wild pitch by Raymond Jenkins in the fourth. Patrick Arlis' single a batter later drove in Austin Easley from third to give Kansas City the 3-1 advantage.
T-Bones starter Kenny Durost ran into trouble in the fifth inning as Chad Ehrnsberger's three-run home run capped off Joliet's first of two four-run innings that ended Durost's night and gave the JackHammers a 5-3 advantage.
Joliet tacked on two more runs in the seventh on solo home runs by Juan Diaz and Derek Nicholson to make the score 7-3. Four more runs in the top of the eighth put the JackHammers up by eight before Kansas City made its late comeback bid.
Raymond Jenkins managed to shake off early control problems to pitch five and two-thirds innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits to improve to 2-5 on the year. Durost pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits in falling to 4-3.
Chris Krawczyk gave up six runs on four hits in two and two-thirds innings of relief. Travis Schlichting pitched a scoreless one and two-thirds inning to finish the game for Kansas City.
Game Notes: Rob Watson's triple in the third inning extended his on-base streak at CommunityAmerica Ballpark to 25 games. Watson's streak is the longest home on-base streak in the Northern League this season...Monday night's attendance of 5,539 was the largest Monday crowd at CommunityAmerica this season...Kenny Durost fell to 0-3 since being named to the Northern League All-Star squad...Since Kansas City took a three-run lead in the third inning, Joliet scored 10 unanswered runs before Benjamin scored in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 11-4...Patrick Arlis went three-for-four with an RBI to post his first three-hit game with Kansas City.
