Schaumburg Flyers News Release

Gary, IN- It was a rough go for the Schaumburg Flyers (2-3, 22-31), as they started their first road trip of the second half. It was a 9-3 defeat by the hands of the Gary Southshore RailCats (4-1, 34-19) as they won for the ninth time against the Flyers.

Drew Dickinson (6-5) had his shortest outing of the season, going 2.1 innings. He went through a tough bottom of the 2nd, which saw the Flyers lefty give up a pair of runs on an RBI double and a ball four wild pitch. It was even rougher for Dickinson in the third inning, as he allowed the first eight men to reach. The RailCats sent up 11 batters to the plate in all, scoring seven runs on six hits and one error.

RailCats starter Jason Shelley (2-1) appeared to have the Flyers' number, picking up his second win in a row against Schaumburg. Coming off the inactive list, Shelley made his first start since defeating the Flyers back on June 12th. He repeated the feat more than a month later, going five innings allowing only one run on five hits.

The Flyers tried to cut into the RailCats' big lead, scoring a run in the 5th, 6th, and 8th innings. However, the deficit was too big for Schaumburg to make the game close. Gary added a pair of insurance runs in the 8th to take an 11-3 lead, which turned out as the final score.

Flyers first baseman Pat O'Sullivan extended his hitting streak to a 16th game, with a single in the 4th inning. The hit also extended O'Sullivan's on-base streak to a 26th game.

A pair of right-handers will do battle in the second game of the four-game series. For the Flyers, it will be Dan Grybash (5-2, 3.80 ERA), and for the RailCats, it will be Travis Kerber (1-3, 5.20 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:00pm at the U.S. Steel Yard.

The Flyers will return to Alexian Field on Tuesday, July 24th to take on the Gary Southshore RailCats. Tickets are available for this game and can be purchased at the Alexian Field box office or online at flyersbaseball.com
