T-Birds Win Second Straight Game

Austin, TX - The New Mexico Thunderbirds (13-13) used a balanced scoring attack, with six players in double figures to beat the Austin Toros (11-14) and win their second straight game, 104-93.

Dar Tucker led the way for the Thunderbirds with 25 points, while Abdulai Jalloh and Marcus Hubbard each had 19.

In the first quarter, a Tucker dunk at the 5:39 mark gave the T-Birds an early 17-10 lead. The Toros answered with a 12-4 run to close the quarter and take a 22-21 lead.

The Thunderbirds defense held the Toros to three 2nd quarter field goals and just 13 points as they outscored Austin by eight points in the quarter to take a 42-35 halftime lead. Tucker and Hubbard combined to lead the T-Birds with eight points each at the break.

With 4:48 remaining in the third quarter, Shane Edwards hit a bucket that gave the Thunderbirds a 62-52 lead. The Austin Toros offense then came alive going on a 12-0 run to take a 64-62 lead. The T-Birds would close the quarter on a 9-2 run and hold a 71-66 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Thunderbirds continued their run into the fourth, scoring the first six points of the quarter to extend their lead to 11 points. The T-Birds led by as many as 12 points in the quarter, but with just over five minutes to play Austin went on an 11-3 run to close the gap to just four points. After a timeout, the Thunderbirds scored five straight points to pull away from the Toros for good.

James Anderson, who was just assigned to the Toros from the San Antonio Spurs scored 17 points and had four rebounds.

The Thunderbirds will be back in action on Saturday when they take on the Austin Toros at 11 a.m.

They will return home on Feb. 1 for the Night of Thunder, in which Rio Rancho High School and Cleveland High School will square off prior to the Thunderbirds games against the Texas Legends.
