Columbus Cottonmouths News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Goaltender Shannon Szabados of the Columbus Cottonmouths (SPHL) made hockey history on Saturday night as the first female to ever pick up a shutout in a professional hockey game. Szabados made 33saves in Huntsville, Ala. en route to a 3-0 shutout win for the Cottonmouths over the Huntsville Havoc.
Signed to the Cottonmouths during the last month of the 2013-14 season, Szabados has appeared in 39 games, starting in 38 of them. She currently has an 18-16-4 career record with Columbus with a 3.29 goals-against
average and a .907 save percentage. She collected her first professional win on November 21, 2014, and went on to finish 15-9-1 in the 2014-15 season. Although tonight marked Szabados' first shutout, she came close several
times last season, allowing only one goal in six of her starts last season.
Besides her much-documented success as the starting goaltender for the Canadian women's ice hockey team, where she backstopped Team Canada to Olympic gold medals in Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, Szabados also had a stellar collegiate career in Canada with MacEwan and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology from 2007 to 2013. She helped the latter to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association championship in 2013 as she went a perfect 6-0 in the playoffs with a 1.87 GAA and .930 save percentage after a regular season that saw her go 15-2-0 with a 1.58 GAA, .916 save percentage, and five shutouts.
Szabados and the Cottonmouths return to home ice on Sunday, December 27, with a home game against Pensacola at 4:00 PM EST. Tickets are still available for this and all games for the remainder of the 2015-16 season. For more information, contact the Cottonmouths office at 706.571.0086.
