Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Syracuse Crunch won in regulation at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena for the first time since Feb. 11, 2004 as center Andrew Murray scored a pair of goals in a 5-2 win against the Binghamton Senators on Sunday evening.
Defenseman Lance Ward picked up his second goal of the year, both coming with his team short handed, to open the game's scoring and give the B-Sens a first period 1-0 lead. Charlie Stephens had the lone assist on Ward's short-handed tally.
Syracuse evened the game as time was winding down in the opening frame when Andy Canzanello put the puck past Binghamton net minder Kelly Guard with Ward in the sin bin serving a slashing minor. Ben Simon and Steven Goertzen picked up assists on the power-play goal.
Syracuse would add two more in the opening minutes of the second period to extend its lead to 3-1. Mark Hartigan added to his team-leading goal tally when he scored his 28th of the season just 11 seconds into the middle frame. Hartigan now has points in 25 of his last 26 games (24 goals, 26 assists) and a goal in seven straight.
Andrew Murray gave the Crunch the two-goal advantage just 58 seconds later when he picked up his ninth goal of the year. That goal would stand up as the game-winner as Binghamton only managed a late Steve Martins tally, his 18th of the season, with less than nine minutes remaining in the third period.
Ben Simon had the fourth Syracuse goal, a short-handed marker at 4:08 of the third period, and Andrew Murray added an empty-net goal with 11 seconds remaining in regulation.
Kelly Guard stopped 33 of 37 shots and had a three-game winning streak broken in the loss. Binghamton failed to score in three power-play chances and Syracuse managed one goal in six tries.
Binghamton returns to action on Wednesday night as they take on the Phantoms in Philadelphia at 7:05 p.m. Catch the action over the airwaves at 680 WINR-AM beginning with Countdown to Face Off at 6:35 p.m. or watch the game live on the B2 Networks webcast.
Notes: This weekend's first annual Face Off Against Cancer, an event aimed at raising awareness and funds for the disease, concluded with a fitting twist. The raffle of Denis Hamel's game-worn 2006 Rbk AHL All-Star Classic jersey was won by the family of local cancer victim Kelly O'Day. Hamel kicked off the raffle on Saturday by purchasing more than $150 in raffle tickets and donating them to the O'Day family without their knowledge. Kelly O'Day's mother Debbie, father Mike, and sister Katie, were surprised upon learning that they had won the jersey at the conclusion of Sunday's game. Funds raised by the raffle benefited the Kelly O'Day Scholarship Fund.
