Syracuse Drops Series Finale 7-4 at Gwinnett

Lawrenceville, GA - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost by a score of 7-4 to the Gwinnett Braves on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Coolray Field. The Braves scored all seven runs within the first five innings and the Chiefs were not able to climb back from the deficit.

Syracuse (41-30) starter Jeff Mandel worked only two and two thirds of an inning allowing seven runs, six earned in his start. Mandel faced thirteen batters, gave up seven hits and three walks and did not record a strikeout. The Braves scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run single from first baseman Freddie Freeman. Gwinnett (32-38) put another run up in the second on a fielders choice bunt by opposing pitcher Ryne Reynoso to extend their lead to 3-0.

In the third, Luis Bolivar made it 4-0 with an RBI double and JC Boscan hit a two run home run to make it 6-0. Reynoso would double following the home run and score on a passed ball for the seventh run of the game for Gwinnett.

The Chiefs scored for the first time in the fifth inning getting three runs. Justin Maxwell laced an RBI single to the outfield to score Collin Balester, Boomer Whiting scored on a wild pitch, and Kevin Mench used a sacrifice fly to score Maxwell. The fourth and final Syracuse run in the game came on a Mench RBI double in the eighth

On Monday, the Chiefs welcome the Charlotte Knights to Syracuse for a four game series at Alliance Bank Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
