Syracuse Mets News Release
(Moosic, PA) - The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped their season opener to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 8-3, Thursday night in Moosic, PA. RailRiders outfielder Ramon Flores hit for the cycle, going 4 for 4 with a walk. He scored three runs and drove in a pair. The RailRiders put together 16 hits in the victory.
Nick Rumbelow got credit for the win out of the Scranton/Wikes-Barre bullpen. The right-hander allowed a run on one hit in an inning of work. Felipe Rivero was saddled with the loss for Syracuse, surrendering three runs on three hits in an inning and a third of work.
Both starters went decision-less in the contest. A.J. Cole lasted five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits. The one earned run was the first of Flores's four hits, a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the first inning.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Bryan Mitchell lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and two runs in his first outing of the year. He walked Emmanuel Burriss to start the game. Burriss would eventually score on Kila Ka'aihue's first Chiefs RBI to give Syracuse a 1-0 first-inning lead.
Each team again matched runs in the second inning. Derrick Robinson reached first on a fielder's choice in his Chiefs debut. After a single by Burriss, Mitchell walked Tony Gwynn, Jr. and Ian Stewart in succession, bringing in the second run of the game. In the bottom of the frame, Flores hit a grounder up the middle, which Burriss fielded. However, a wide flip to second allowed Cole Figueroa to score an unearned run and tied the game.
The game held at 2-2 until the top of the sixth. Robinson reached on a walk against southpaw Tyler Webb and stole second. He came around to score on Burriss's first RBI of the year to give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead. Robinson walked twice and scored two runs in his Syracuse debut.
But that's where the Chiefs scoring ended. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre erupted for six runs between the seventh and eighth. In the seventh, Slade Heathcott singled with one out and stole second base. After a walk to Ramon Flores, Rivero allowed a single to Rob Refsnyder, which drove in Heathcott and tied the game. After Kyle Roller reached on an infield single, Tyler Austin picked up a two-run knock off Manny Delcarmen, driving in two Scranton/Wilkes-Barre runs, and giving the RailRiders their first lead of the game.
In the eighth, Nick Noonan and Eddy Rodriguez led off with singles. Noonan scored on a groundout by Heathcott. Then Flores finished off his cycle, doubling to right-center field, scoring Rodriguez and giving the RailRiders a 7-3 lead. Three batters later, Austin hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Flores and the eighth run.
The Chiefs and RailRiders return to action tomorrow from PNC Field. Taylor Jordan is on the bump for Syracuse opposite Jaron Long for SWB. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
