Colorado Springs, CO- The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC season ended Friday night after being eliminated from the USL Playoffs by Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2.
The Switchbacks would be the ones to get on the board first as a key tackle by Miguel Gonzalez set up a critical pass to Josh Suggs who played a perfect cross to Luke Vercollone who headed it home. The lead wouldn't last long though as Vancouver made the best of two defensive mistakes by the Switchbacks leading to goals by Kyle Greig and Kianz Froese in the 17th and 31st minutes. Vancouver would hold onto the 1-2 lead into the half,
The Switchbacks looked strong coming out in the second half. They had multiple opportunities in the attacking third but Vancouver was able to block the majority of the Switchbacks' shots. Vancouver nearly doubled their lead in the 50th minute as a nice through ball came through leading to a one-on-one with Devala Gorrick, but Gorrick was able to come up with the late save. The Switchbacks would continue to make a push as the game progressed, but caught a few unlucky breaks and came up short. Whitecaps FC 2 would hold on to their lead in stoppage time and walk away with a 1-2 win over the Switchbacks. Whitecaps FC 2 will move on to the Western Conference Semifinals to play the winner of Rio Grande Valley FC and Oklahoma City Energy FC 's match tomorrow.
The Switchbacks finished the season 3rd in the Western Conference regular season with a 14-9-7 record (49 points). The 49 points were a new franchise record and the 14 wins tied their record they set in their inaugural 2015 season. Mike Seth finished as the leading goal scorer (8 goals) and assist leader (5 assists). Devala Gorrick set a new franchise record for clean sheets (12) and a goals allowed average (0.86).
